Environment Programme has gathered past winners of its \"Sasakawa Environment Prize\" to focus attention on the need to clean up China's polluted environment.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at Monday's opening ceremony in Beijing, China's minister of the State Environmental Protection Administration said the country's rapid development had resulted in \"many environmental problems\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe government is hoping that the country's economy will quadruple in the first 20 years of this century but it realises the environmental damage that unchecked economic growth has caused so far.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, official efforts to curb pollution and ecological destruction are often ignored and laws flouted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe State Environmental Protection Administration admits that in many cases, local authorities take part in such abuses.\u003cbr/\u003eAttending Monday's ceremony was China's Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN hailed the senior official's attendance as a sign that the country's top leadership wants to get serious about protecting the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the prize-winning environmentalists at the UNEP event emphasised that it's hard to strike a balance between economic growth and good ecology.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they say that even if cost-effective solutions are technologically available, there's always a host of social and political problems which can prevent the implementation of measures to cut pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's pollution problems include acid rain, which is said to fall over two-thirds of the country, and atmospheric pollution in its fast-growing cities, as well as desertification and water pollution which prevents fish from living in parts of China's seven major waterways.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year is the 20th anniversary of the UNEP Sasekawa Environment Prize which is awarded to leading international
