Olivia waves goodbye 'The End'\u003cbr/\u003eEver wish that someone would bring you a nice hot drink whenever you asked?\u003cbr/\u003eWell, a social robot could be just your cup of tea.\u003cbr/\u003eSingapore scientists are developing sociable automatons that could serve as in-house companions or even office receptionists.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Olivia, super friendly and eager to please.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's just one of a new breed of people-friendly robots, designed to work in social situations.\u003cbr/\u003eImagine sauntering into the kitchen, ready for that morning hit of caffeine - and there is faithful MIKA happy to oblige.\u003cbr/\u003eMIKA is the brainchild of the Singapore scientists of A*Star's Social Robotics Programme - ASORO, founded three years ago (2008).\u003cbr/\u003eA*Star is the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, a government unit established in 2002.  It focuses on scientific research and in identifying new areas of R\u0026amp;D that would help improve the Singapore economy. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Kin Mun Lye is the Executive Director of Institute for Infocomm Research, one of the research institutes in A*Star that helped create ASORO's robots. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the professor social robotics is an area ripe for development.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We found that social robotics is a very good area.  Not only is it timely, not only is the science and the engineering at the stage that we think there is definitely market potential, and at the same time, we already have some technologies that we have developed over the years that we could leverage to create innovations in this space.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn a survey conducted by the Washington-based National Association of Manufacturers and the Boston Consulting Group, Singapore was ranked number one in the 2009 study of the world's ten most innovative nations.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's not too surprising. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Singapore government has a keen interest in nurturing innovations through technology. It hopes that these innovations will have a direct economic impact and encourage the growth of a knowledge-based economy.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Lye thinks that certain existing conditions in Singapore also encouraged its development in social robotics.\u003cbr/\u003eA shortage of people is one. Lye points out the large population of foreign domestic maids in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eReplacing immigrant domestic labour with robots is still long way off, but Lye believes there is a foreseeable need to develop robotics technology to provide better and more cost effective services at home and in the office.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far ASORO has developed seven social robots.\u003cbr/\u003eBesides household assistant MIKA, and office receptionist OLIVIA, there's a so-called 'tele-presence' robot named LUCAS.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth LUCAS and OLIVIA were unveiled last year at the Robo Cup 2010 Competition in Singapore. \u003cbr/\u003eEach robot took about a year to build, and has a unique set of skills.  But all three use technologies developed in the ASORO lab to communicate and behave like humans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe various cameras and microphones installed in the robots help them detect and understand human motions and voice commands.\u003cbr/\u003eLUCAS is not quite as autonomous or well-equipped as its counterparts. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is designed mainly to fulfil simple tasks like providing information to visitors in an information kiosk.\u003cbr/\u003ePutting the robots into a simulation or a real environment is an important way to learn where to take the research next, says Haizhou Li, Programme Manager at ASORO.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Through the research and deployment of these field robots, we study and we learn more how different aspects of the social robot needs and this way we advance the technology and the technology can be multiplied.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs a robot receptionist, OLIVIA can greet guests and respond to a few key phrases. The newer 2.1 version can recognise and respond to natural human speech.\u003cbr/\u003eWith several head-mounted cameras and microphones, the new Olivia version is able to track human faces and eyes, with different tracking modes for different situations.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce OLIVIA detects the source and the direction of human speech, it will turn to the speaker in a pan or tilt movement. \u003cbr/\u003eAs OLIVIA 2.1 was designed to respond to human speech only, it will not respond to other sounds like hand claps.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it can repeat gestures learned from a human demonstrator via its motion learning technology.\u003cbr/\u003eMIKA's main function is to assist in household tasks in a 'smart home' environment - an automaton butler.\u003cbr/\u003eBut since MIKA is more focused on utility than speech, you may get your morning coffee OK but it won't come with much of a conversation.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Lye says the ASORO programme is planning to invest in more social robotics research, especially in the area of cognitive intelligence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are going to carry on this programme and invest in more technologies and to take it further, especially ,\" he says, \"the cognitive intelligence part, which we think is the next breakthrough that will allow robots to be more easily deployed in the market.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIf MIKA and friends
