Wide shot of the girls dancing with sun setting\u003cbr/\u003eA new law to deal with violence against women has provided a ray of hope to millions of Indian women who have been battling to get justice in a country with a deep-rooted culture of gender discrimination.\u003cbr/\u003eThe brutal gang-rape of a young student in New Delhi last year set off nationwide protests, sparking a debate about how women are treated within Indian society -and how they should respond.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a school hall in suburban Mumbai, a 'Capoeira' class is in progress. \u003cbr/\u003eCaren D'costa is one of the young students hard at work learning this unique Brazilian blend of acrobatics, dance, martial arts, music and singing. \u003cbr/\u003e24-year old D'costa lives in the far-flung suburb of Borivili and uses public transport everyday to travel across town to her college in south Mumbai. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the gang-rape and death of a 23-year old paramedic student in the Indian capital last year, girls like D'costa are looking for ways to keep safe without giving up their freedom to move around in public spaces. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Travelling late, I don't think anybody, no boy, is going to escort me back home and to college every day. So I think doing martial arts keeps you safe. You know at the back of your head, if anything happens, you know you can protect yourself,\" says D'costa. \u003cbr/\u003eThe gang-raped of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi in December has galvanised public anger in India over violence against women and the inability of authorities to stop them.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian culture has a deeply rooted preference for sons and for most women in this country of 1.2 billion, there are few real choices. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mistreatment starts early - with sex-selective abortions and even female infanticides that have skewed India's gender ratio to 914 girls under age 6 for every 1,000 boys. \u003cbr/\u003eThe patriarchal tradition also says they will get married and become mothers, preferably of boys. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce married , thousands of women have to face demands for dowry - a tradition that requires the bride's family to provide money and goods to the groom's family.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2010, 8391 dowry death cases were reported across India, according to statistics recently released by the National Crime Records Bureau.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of them were burned alive in a particularly grisly form of retribution.\u003cbr/\u003eTarot reader and numerology consultant Sneha B Jawale is one of those statistics.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring her four and half years of marriage, Sneha was often harassed for a dowry by her in-laws. \u003cbr/\u003eOn December 24, 2000, events took a horrifying turn for the worse. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My husband and his elder brother, together, burnt me because of dowry demands,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003e \"I was in the kitchen, cleaning the platform when they approached me from behind and poured kerosene over me. Before I could realise what was happening I was completely burnt,\" recounts Sneha at her home.\u003cbr/\u003eKnowing that recourse to the legal system, which was biased against her and sided with her powerful husband, was futile, Sneha withdrew her legal battle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe outcry over the Delhi bus rape has now forced the government to rush through a new law to protect women.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong its provisions are increased punishments for rape from the existing seven to 10 years to a maximum of 20 years and death penalty in extreme cases of rape.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has also made voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law. \u003cbr/\u003eMadhuri Sontakke , an Advocate in the Mumbai High Court , says the new law is a step in the right direction. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The new law is very women-friendly. The earlier law was not so women-friendly, there were lot of loopholes, and criminals were able to escape, but the new law is very strict and women-friendly, and women will get protection as well as back support from the law,\" Madhuri says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone thinks the law is bold enough to combat violent attacks on women. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the family of 25-year-old Keenan Santos , the action is too little too late. \u003cbr/\u003eOn October 20, 2011, Keenan was enjoying a night out with his friends when a drunken man started to misbehave with one of the girls in their group. \u003cbr/\u003eRushing to her defence, Keenan and his friend were soon attacked by an armed and violent mob.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the fight that ensued, Keenan lost his life.\u003cbr/\u003eHis father Valerian Santos says the government needs to put in place stronger policing and tougher laws that can help prevent such attacks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What I feel is that most of the time, the government or the authorities that be, just do fire-fighting. Bring out preventive policing, bring out preventive laws that deter people,\" says Valerian Santos, Keenan's father. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the nationwide protests sparked by the New Delhi rape incident have led to calls to end violence against women and girls and have forced people to recognise the problem of sexual violence.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the One Billion Rising event on February 14 led by author and activist Eve Ensler, thousands of young men and women danced to raise awareness of the United Nations statistic that one in three women worldwide will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.\u003cbr/\u003eFor a young working woman like Priyanka Dutta , the key to social change lies in sensitising the people to the urgent need for gender equity. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If we make them sensitised, if we make them understand that what they are doing is not right; women are not just some creatures, we are just human beings and we have equal rights and equal desires and aspirations and we should be treated as equals in this society and if others realise this and treat us the same, then we could have made maybe a small change,\" says Datta.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong those cheering the young performers at the One Billion Rising campaign was Sneha Jawale. \u003cbr/\u003eShe may have been scarred for life but says that the coming together of women to push for change gives her hope for the future.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I was fighting my case, at the time there weren't such strong laws. But now I feel there will be a revolution, there is a new thinking, people have found the means to help each other and they are coming forward to help each other,\" says Sneha.\u003cbr/\u003eThe women's rights groups are demanding that new laws should also deal with the issue of marital rape or sexual violence against women by armed forces personnel in conflict zones.\u003cbr/\u003eThough the new law has already taken effect, it still needs to be passed by Parliament within six months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it intends to hold consultations with political parties and lawmakers
