have to make an effort to cut back on electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Rio de Janeiro, efforts to cut 20 percent of the electricity consumption have already begun. \u003cbr/\u003eShopping centres are among the main targets of the federal government's plan.  \u003cbr/\u003eThere are 234 shopping centers in Brazil, 37 in Rio alone. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, this sector's income throughout the country was 23 Billion Reais (10 (m) million U-S dollars). \u003cbr/\u003eIn one shopping centre in Rio's upmarket South-Zone, 172 shops and restaurants are already in the electricity rationing area: 50 percent of the lights have been off since the beginning of May.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe shopping centre has 1 million visitors each month. \u003cbr/\u003eThe director of the centre Alexandre Barros says consumption has already been reduced by 11 percent.  \u003cbr/\u003eRestaurant owners in Rio are also trying to find ways to save electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eMarina Tasakhi, the owner of a Japanese restaurant, switched off the lights of an ornamental fountain last week and the use of air-conditioning has been also reduced. \u003cbr/\u003ePetrol stations were caught by surprise this week by the government's measures. \u003cbr/\u003eSome 29 thousand petrol stations, that used to be open 24 hours, will have to close between 10:00 PM and 06:00 AM. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to government statistics, this will save enough electricity to light a city with 500 thousand inhabitants. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Alisio Jacques Mendes Vaz, Director of the National Syndicate of Petrol Distributors, is against the idea, saying it will deprive the public of an important service and could lead to job losses.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile it is difficult for some sectors to follow these measures, Brazilian football is already contributing: since last weekend, all training session or football games in the country have been moved to day time, to save power. \u003cbr/\u003eThe biggest Brazilian football club, Clube de Regatas Flamengo, with millions of supporters all over the country, is training for the final of Rio de Janeiro Championship, which is taking place on Sunday, only with day light. \u003cbr/\u003eAs every single Brazilian house has to save up to 20 percent of electricity from June onwards, residential buildings administrators decided are going back to school. \u003cbr/\u003eThis week, the Rio de Janeiro Civilian Defence is running a free 3-hour-course where anyone can learn how to save electricity at home. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea of the programme is to teach buildings administrators to pass on the lessons to the other residents. \u003cbr/\u003eIn only five days, 600 people have already taken the course. \u003cbr/\u003eNilcea Tanir is the administrator of a building with a total of 180 residents. \u003cbr/\u003eIn her opinion, everyone should make an effort to contribute to avoid what Brazilians fear most at the moment: the blackout. \u003cbr/\u003eDue to the rationing of power, one of the symbols of Rio de Janeiro, the worldwide famous Sugar Loaf Mountain is in darkness. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday night, the federal government surprised the entire country by saying that every Monday could potentially be declared a national holiday as part of the cutback effort.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, facing legal challenges to the plan, President Cardoso has announced on Friday that his government would examine possible amendments on Monday to make sure the plan is \"not excessive... or contrary to fundamental democratic or legal values.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCardoso's
