Later, she earned a masters in fine arts at Cornell, where she was awarded a Truman Capote fellowship. She is currently in a fellowship at Stanford University.\u003cbr/\u003eBulawayo's novel, described by Zimbabwean media as sassy, witty, intricate and elegantly written, has also received positive reviews in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eBulawayo, who was visiting Zimbabwe to promote her debut novel said the news she had made it onto the Booker shortlist came as a surprise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was overwhelming frankly. In the local SinNdebele language of her western Matabeleland province, \"NoViolet\" means \"withViolet.\" In English, it signifies deep remembrance of an absent mother and traditional family values. And beyond that I was growing up in the early 80's and it was common for women to stay home while men went to work. So I was always surrounded by women who were telling one story in one form or another, neighborhood gossip and what not and combined with the story of the story tellers my dad and grandma I think I developed an ear for story for voice for agency, understanding the audience. But of course that wasn't enough as I found out when I started trying to write seriously. You need to understand craft very very intimately.
