Effigy of Uncle Sam burning \u003cbr/\u003eAs Iran prepares to mark the 30th anniversary of its Islamic revolution that toppled the US-backed Shah and brought hardline clerics to power, a number of Iranians support the changes the revolution brought and its current political leadership.\u003cbr/\u003eAnniversary festivities highlight the homecoming of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, whose return to Iran sparked mass protests that led to the ouster of then leader, pro-Western Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, in 1979.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the many difficulties some Iranians face in their day-to-day lives including rising inflation, unemployment, bad housing, lack of social and political freedoms, and difficult relations with the international community, not many Iranians long for the pre-revolution era.\u003cbr/\u003eSome believe that although the Islamic Republic has failed to live up to many of the goals it was established upon, its accomplishments for the country in many areas should not be ignored.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers also say that despite the shortcomings, there is no better alternative for ruling the country.\u003cbr/\u003eJa'far Najafian, a 55-year old taxi driver who took an active part in the 1979 revolution that toppled the Shah, recalled the days of massive demonstrations in Tehran's streets and in Azadi square.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Almost all people were in streets every day and no one would remain home. Young, old, women and men would go to streets to protest and change the regime,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut reformers say they are still having to fight for some of the goals of the revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eThose of younger generations acknowledge hardships facing average Iranians.\u003cbr/\u003eAsghar Bayat is a young man who did not experience a pre-revolution Iran, and said he is dissatisfied with the current management of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eBayat argued with one of his peers who supports the revolution that he has little hope for the situation of working class people improving.\u003cbr/\u003eReligious motives were a key driving force in pushing people toward changing the regime. \u003cbr/\u003eMosques played an important role as the centres for anti-Shah speeches and many street demonstrations were ignited in mosques.\u003cbr/\u003eHossein Khanbakhsh is a carpenter who was born in 1979, the year of the revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eKhanbakhsh compared what he has seen in the post-revolution era and what he heard from his parents about the situation of the country when the Shah ruled. \u003cbr/\u003eHe reached the conclusion that overall, Iran has found a better place in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most prominent experts in contemporary Iranian history, Abbas Salimi Namin, said the nation had reached a point where it saw it as inevitable to change the despotic regime of the Shah and eradicate the influence in the country of the US and Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Shah had ruled for nearly four decades, and became increasingly isolated from the Iranian people, propped up by huge oil wealth, the loyalty of the military, and Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the revolution and the 1979 storming of the US Embassy in Tehran by hardline students, the United States broke off diplomatic relations with Iran, and lost it's foremost ally in the region - it's a loss Washington is still coming to terms with.\u003cbr/\u003eThe neo-conservatives in the Bush administration, led by former Vice-President Cheney, were reportedly keen to pursue an attack on Iran, citing the threat of nuclear capability, and possibly an attempt at regime change.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new Obama administration had made more conciliatory noises in Tehran's direction.\u003cbr/\u003eThis would appear to be the road forward to a thaw in relations - Salimi said that Iran is still looking forward to change but within the structure of the current system and by applying reforms.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
