Wide of media\u003cbr/\u003eA New Jersey man and his 9-year-old son were reunited on Thursday in Brazil after a five-year international custody battle, and immediately headed home to spend the holidays in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is now time for our new beginning, the rebirth of our family at such a special time of the year,\" Goldman wrote in a letter that was read to reporters by US Representative Chris Smith after the father and son''s plane took off.\u003cbr/\u003eSmith said Goldman and his son left on a private jet chartered by the US news channel NBC, which took off shortly before noon.\u003cbr/\u003eSean''s arrival at the US Consulate earlier on Thursday was tumultuous, with his Brazilian relatives passing on US officials'' offer to use a secured entrance to a garage. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead they parked a block away and walked the boy, wearing a Brazilian Olympics tee-shirt, through scores of reporters, cameramen and security guards. \u003cbr/\u003eViolent shoving broke out in front of the consulate''s doors as the boy was spirited inside.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boy''s maternal grandmother, Silvana Bianchi, wanted to travel with Sean to the United States to help in the transition, but family lawyer Sergio Tostes said her wish was denied by the American government. \u003cbr/\u003eTostes said he had asked the Brazilian government to intervene but authorities said the US decision had to be respected.\u003cbr/\u003eTostes said that the authorities even refused to allow Bianchi to be present at the handover.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They did not allow his grandmother to go in with the child to be handed over to David Goldman. I don''t want go alone!''\" Tostes said.\u003cbr/\u003eGoldman won a big legal victory late on Tuesday when Brazil''s chief justice upheld a lower court''s ruling that ordered Sean returned to him.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Brazilian family said on Wednesday it was dropping legal challenges to rulings giving custody to Goldman. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the New Jersey man said repeatedly that until he was on a plane heading to the US with Sean at his side, he would not feel relief.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Brazilian family brought the boy to the consulate about 25 minutes before the 9 a.m. (1100 GMT) court-ordered deadline.\u003cbr/\u003eSean has lived in Brazil since Goldman''s ex-wife, Bruna Bianchi, brought him to her native country for what was supposed to be a two-week holiday in 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eBruna Bianchi stayed, divorced Goldman and remarried, and Goldman began legal efforts to get back Sean.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year Bianchi died in childbirth, but her husband, Joao Paulo Lins e Silva, continued the legal fight, winning temporary custody.\u003cbr/\u003eLins e Silva, a prominent divorce attorney in his father''s family law firm, used all legal means available to keep the boy in Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite numerous court rulings in favour of Goldman, Lins e Silva continuously found an appeal route that delayed a handover.\u003cbr/\u003eGoldman said this week that if he won, he would let the Brazilian family visit. But now, he said, it''s time for Sean''s US relatives to get to know the boy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We will go to the ends of the Earth to protect him and shower him with every ounce of love that we have,\"
