Mid of sign reading in English : 'Jeita thanks your visit'\u003cbr/\u003eLebanon has launched a campaign to encourage people to vote for a cave complex called Jeita Grotto as a new natural wonder of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost one year ago on July 8 2008, seven new cultural and architectural wonders were announced. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and three architectural marvels from Latin America were among the new seven wonders of the world chosen in a global poll. \u003cbr/\u003eNow there is a new project to choose the world's seven top natural wonders. \u003cbr/\u003eThe caverns of Jeita Grotto are located in Mount Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003eThese caves and galleries are known to man since Palaeolithic times. \u003cbr/\u003eThe action of water has created cathedral-like vaults beneath the wooded hills of Mount Lebanon forming magnificent caverns. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Cave is made of two levels, the Lebanese speleologists (cave experts) have penetrated about 4.5 miles (7 km) from the entry point of the grotto to the far end of the underground river and about 1.3 mile (2.2 km) of the upper galleries. \u003cbr/\u003eLebanese tourist organisations and the Lebanese government have launched a campaign to promote the grotto, after the site qualified to the second stage of the nomination process of the seven wonders of nature .\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Seven Wonders of the World website Jeita is ranked 49 out of 77 nominees of the seven wonders of the nature in the world \u003cbr/\u003eThe results of the first poll, focusing on cultural and architectural wonders were announced in July 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 100 million votes were cast by the Internet and cellphone (mobile phone) text messages, said New7Wonders, the nonprofit organisation that conducted the poll. \u003cbr/\u003eThe project was launched in 1999 by the Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost 200 nominations came in, and the list was narrowed to the 21 most-voted by the start of 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eNabil Haddad, Coordinator of Lebanese Campaign says that that Jeita's geology is unique. \u003cbr/\u003eAline Rechany a Geologist explains some characteristics :\u003cbr/\u003e\"The cave is made up of Jurassic lime layers ,it is located in Kesrwan in mount Lebanon.The cave is 9 kilometres deep only 6.2 kilometres has been explored, and it has a river inside it and its made of several huge rooms that reaches 100 meters in height .The cave is also full of architectural forms made by water carvings for more than ten thousand years ,we still need in depth studies in order to know the age of the grotto .\" \u003cbr/\u003eJeita is the longest cave complex in the Middle East, it sits at 300 meters (980 ft) above sea level and has a height difference of 305 meters (1,000 ft). \u003cbr/\u003eGeologically, the caves provide a tunnel or escape route for the underground river, which is the principal source of the Dog River.\u003cbr/\u003eGhina Amiouni a Lebanese tourist says she is proud of her country and is determined to vote for Jeita to be included on the new list of seven natural wonders. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother visitor  Najah Abidou says that she can not find the words to express the beauty of the caves. \u003cbr/\u003eThe traditional seven wonders were concentrated in the Mediterranean and Middle East. \u003cbr/\u003eThat list was derived from lists of marvels compiled by ancient Greek observers, the best known being Antipater of Sidon, a writer in the 2nd century B.C.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria have all vanished. \u003cbr/\u003eWeber's Switzerland-based foundation aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments. \u003cbr/\u003eIt relies on private donations and revenue from selling broadcasting rights. \u003cbr/\u003eThe U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, or UNESCO, keeps a list of World Heritage Sites, which now totals 851 places, but the agency was not involved in Weber's project.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers admit there was no foolproof way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favourite.  \u003cbr/\u003eLebanon's tourism Minister Joe Sarkis says that he hopes that Jeita and the cedars of Lebanon will be voted onto the list. \u003cbr/\u003eNominations can be submitted for the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign until December 31, 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eThen a panel of experts will create a list of 21 candidates from which voters worldwide will elect the New 7 Wonders of
