Hundreds of thousands of children toil in sweatshops and factories throughout Asia, even though most countries have outlawed child labour. Twelve-year-old Iqbal Masih works in a Pakistani carpet factory. His working day begins at four a.m. and continues until seven or eight p.m. If his co-workers, all children, fall asleep or work\u003cbr/\u003etoo slowly, they are beaten or deprived of food. Iqbal says his\u003cbr/\u003efather loaned him to the factory owners when he was four. He would\u003cbr/\u003eearn money for his family, they said, and he could often come home\u003cbr/\u003eon visits. Neither promise came true. Children become sick and\u003cbr/\u003edisfigured in the carpet factories -- wool cuts their hands and\u003cbr/\u003ewool particles get into their lungs. Qanar Sartari, chairman of the southeast Asian coalition on child servitude, is campaigning to end the employment of children. Child labour is illegal in India but police are often bribed to turn a blind eye. During one raid the owners had somehow been tipped off and had hidden the children. Many children believed what their owners told them: that the police were coming to kill them. Masih escaped from his owner, and has managed to publicise his story, both in Pakistan and abroad. This week the Reebok foundation gave him an award to spread his message still further. Iqbal wants to become a lawyer, and do in Pakistan what Abraham Lincoln did in America.
