Performance clip 'Ladies And Gents' \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the quirkier shows vying for attention at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival is 'Ladies and Gents,' performed in a public toilet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fringe has always been known for the wide variety of venues - shows have long popped up in church halls, bars and spare rooms as well as theatres. This year, the festival's 207 venues also include caves, a car and a step ladder.\u003cbr/\u003eDirections for 'Ladies and Gents' read \"The Public Toilets, St James Place (near the Greenside Roundabout).\"\u003cbr/\u003eIrish director Karl Sheils was intent on staging a play in a public lavatory.  He has already staged the play at last year's Dublin fringe festival - where it was a hit - and searched Edinburgh for the perfect convenience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe loos he has found have two sections - a claustrophobic gents and a more spacious ladies.\u003cbr/\u003eWriter Paul Walker explains how the setting lends extra depth to the show.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When the audience come they're split into two, half go into the gents and half go into the ladies and the show's run simultaneously, so the people in the gents see their show and the ladies see the ladies show and then there's an interval of five minutes and they're not allowed to talk to each other during that interval and then they switch around and it's vice versa, the ladies see the gents and the gents see the ladies, and by seeing both pieces you get to know what the full story is.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe play is inspired by events in 1957 when a prominent Irish politician Peter Evans hanged himself after uncompromising pictures were published in a daily newspaper, and by a shocking version of Tennessee William's 'The Rose Tattoo' at a Dublin theatre which included the appearance of a condom on stage, breaching a 19th Century law and causing outrage. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the ladies, in Walker's 'Ladies and Gents,' prostitute and journalist argue about how best to surprise a politician. In the gents, the prostitute's husband is pimping his wife to the politician - except all is not as it first appears.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a film noir, set in 1957 Dublin and it's like 'Brighton Rock' meets 'The Third Man' with a bit of sex thrown in as well,\" says Walker.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics say the cramped grotty conditions add to the air of mystery, keeping the audience close to the action, and on the edge throughout.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the play's actors, Paschal Friel says the unusual venue makes the show special.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Conventional theatre you create that environment, you design that environment whereas our environment is already created so we have to work around that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIf any further proof were needed that the venue is indeed a public toilet - they are still in use.  The WCs are open right up until an hour before the play starts.\u003cbr/\u003eSemper Fi, the company set up by 31 year old Shiels, for directors, producers, actors and writers has enjoyed a rising profile since 'Ladies and Gents' did well in Dublin.\u003cbr/\u003eThey already have their sights set on the future - more possible site-specific theatre projects that Shiels has in mind include 'Bed'
