Mercedes has the view that if they can get people behind the wheel and see how much fun they are to drive, they usually deliver much more torque (power) than a gasoline equivalent, how much fun they are to drive, what kind of fuel economy you get, they'll catch on. But there's just a massive perception problem, the word \"diesel\" is truly a dirty word in the US automotive industry and it's going to take generations probably to start to absorb that and to test it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e30. Boys at auto show sitting in and playing in a car\u003cbr/\u003eFuel prices in the United States are now averaging more than three US dollars a gallon.  \u003cbr/\u003eWorldwide concerns about carbon emissions and political instability in some oil producing regions, has prompted  US car manufacturers to begin to develop alternative fuel technology while still producing high performance vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eToyota is just one of the major car manufacturers investing in new fuel technologies. It's Prius hybrid car, which runs on a combination of petrol and electricity, has been on the market since 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eNow fuel technology company Quantum Technologies has taken the concept one step further and has re-engineered the Prius so that it can by powered by hydrogen. \u003cbr/\u003eQuantum uses the same Prius hybrid engine and electric motor, but converts the petrol engine to run on hydrogen fuel. \u003cbr/\u003eThey claim the result is a car virtually emissions free: they say only thing coming out of the tailpipe is water. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials at Irvine, California-based Quantum see their hydrogen powered hybrids as the first step in a bid to help the US end its dependence on oil. \u003cbr/\u003eCEO Alan Niedzwiecki and his team at Quantum are focused on improving alternative fuel technologies. \u003cbr/\u003eThe firm is already selling fleets of hydrogen Prius hybrids, and is now exploring the use of hydrogen-fuelled cars powered by fuel cells. \u003cbr/\u003eFuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity to run an electric car motor. \u003cbr/\u003eNiedzwiecki says hydrogen could be the fuel that powers the next generation of cars from the world's big automakers. \u003cbr/\u003eQuantum is already stepping up production to meet demand for its business of converting petrol-powered cars to run on hydrogen power.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's churning out dozens of these hydrogen fuel tanks at its own manufacturing facility in Irvine, about 40 miles (64 kilometres) south of Los Angeles. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tanks are made of super-strong composite materials. \u003cbr/\u003eNiedzwiecki admits there's still work to be done before an advanced hydrogen-powered car is ready for the consumer market. \u003cbr/\u003eQuantum is taking on both ends of the transport challenge, designing alternative fuel cars and the technology to refuel them at the roadside.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey've developed hydrogen refuelling systems to be used initially in Norway and California, where officials are working to create the first so-called hydrogen highways. \u003cbr/\u003eThe US military also wants to be part of the revolution. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Army is paying Quantum to develop an off-road combat vehicle, also powered by hydrogen. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Quantum Aggressor is an all-terrain two-seater designed for speed and stealth. \u003cbr/\u003eIts hydrogen-powered electric motor is nearly silent, and pushes the combat buggy along at a top speed of 80 miles (128 kilometres) per hour.\u003cbr/\u003eMercedes-Benz is taking a different approach altogether.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are focusing on better fuel economy and performance from new diesel technology.\u003cbr/\u003eMercedes is promoting DaimlerChrysler''s Bluetec diesel technology, which reduces nitrogen oxides and other harmful vehicle emissions.\u003cbr/\u003e''Clean'' and ''diesel'' are not words that usually go together but Mercedes claim to have created the world's cleanest ever diesel engine with Bluetec.\u003cbr/\u003eUS car buyers have been slow to embrace the latest diesels because of environmental concerns and bad memories of the polluting diesels of the 1980s. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly about three percent of the vehicles sold in the United States last year had diesel engines, compared to half of all vehicles in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eJames Bell a representative of 'Intellichoice' the car information website believes there is a  massive perception problem.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the word \"diesel\" is truly a dirty word in the US automotive industry and it's
