Mid shot of wolf nuzzling and licking Laetitia's face\u003cbr/\u003eIt sounds like something out of a Kipling novel, a 24-year old French woman has been living with wolves for the past 3 years.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Laetitia Becker's there by choice - she's been looking after them in a remote part of Russia ever since they were caught by a local hunter.\u003cbr/\u003eSome days she spends up to 10 hours with the wolves in complete silence. \u003cbr/\u003eA pack of wolves is usually a frightening sight, but not to Laetitia Becker.\"I can tell when they approach me if they are friendly or not\", says Laetitia.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery morning Laetitia walks into the nearby forest and releases the young wolves from their pen.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are part of her study into the behaviour of wolves. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the last six months she has reared these 7 cubs, caught by a hunter at the local nature preserve. \u003cbr/\u003eSoon she will release them back into the wild where they will join the other packs.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the weather is good, Laetitia can walk with the wolves for up to 10 hours...in complete silence. They are not dogs, she says, and should not get used to the sound of the human voice.\u003cbr/\u003eThe young French woman seems happy with her solitary life. She lives a very modest existence, the only modern convenience is her laptop computer on which she keeps her journal and writes e-mails to her parents, which she sends twice a month from a town half an hour's drive away.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are just five people in Laetitia's village, all pensioners. \u003cbr/\u003eOn her walks she passes a succession of dead villages, their wooden houses abandoned and in ruins.\u003cbr/\u003eShe rents an old abandoned shack. With no running water, she has to make daily trips to the local river. Her diet is modest and consists mainly of potatoes, rice, pasta and buckwheat. Her only luxuries are chocolate and books, sent from France by her parents.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only contact Laetitia has with the outside world is Vladimir Bologov, the head of the wolf rehabilitation project in Russia's Tver region.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Tver, a hunter receives a bounty of $50 USD for every wolf caught. \u003cbr/\u003eThey usually end up in zoos, circuses or sold at markets or on the internet. Those that cannot be sold are killed.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce a week Vladimir drives Laetitia back to his village so she can take a sauna with the local women, often her only social interaction.\u003cbr/\u003eLaetitia does make it back to Strasbourg once a year, but says that after two weeks in the city she feels suffocated.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon the wolves will be a year old, and it will be time to release them. Laeititia is already dreading the moment. \u003cbr/\u003eWith her wolves at her side, she says she lives an idyllic existence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only thing missing is a partner.
