I wanted to get athletes that were popular and also ones that I felt had have longevity and people who didn't like sports would know who they were. He now would be delighted that all these people are still well famous.  I can't think of any artist who has portrayed an athlete or a sports star, an artist of any recognition. Wide of  portrait of Muhammad Ali, Boxer\u003cbr/\u003eA complete series of Andy Warhol's sports portraits has gone on sale in London, with a �14.2 million ($28.24 million) price tag. \u003cbr/\u003eSports starts from Pele to OJ Simpson and Muhammad Ali all posed for Warhol's camera and were immortalised in his unique style. \u003cbr/\u003eA small gallery in West London is hosting some of the biggest names in sports from the 1970s. \u003cbr/\u003eA collection of portraits, by the master of the pop art genre, Andy Warhol, have gone on sale. (Wednesday May 23, 2007).   \u003cbr/\u003eThe series of paintings are a part of a collection that was commissioned by art lover Richard Weisman. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1977 Weisman asked Warhol to paint portraits of ten athletes who were world famous at that time. \u003cbr/\u003eWeisman said he tried to pick athletes that he felt had longevity and were popular household names.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sports stars were Dorothy Hamil, Ice skater; Chris Evert, Tennis Player; Tom Seaver, Baseball player; Pele, Football Player; Jack Nicklaus, Golfer ; OJ Simpson, American Football Player;  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball player; Willie Shoemaker, Jockey; Rod Gilbert, Ice Hockey player and Muhammad Ali, Boxer. \u003cbr/\u003eGallery owner Martin Summers says Warhol was fascinated with celebrities. \u003cbr/\u003eWeisman says he commissioned the paintings because he wanted to bridge the gap between sports and the arts. \u003cbr/\u003eIn total Warhol painted eight sets of ten portraits, one of the sets is on sale in London. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition there are a number of extra portraits which did not make the final sets, some of which are on sale in London for between � 450,000 - 3.5 million sterling ($894, 855 to 6.9 million US dollars).  \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral smaller paintings were commissioned by Jack Nicklaus and Chris Evert who were so happy with Warhol's work that they wanted extra versions for themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eEach star was given one large painting of themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eWeisman presented various sports governing bodies with pictures of the athletes from their disciplines, for example the Hockey Hall of Fame was given a portrait of Ice Hockey Player, Rod Gilbert. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are also sets on display at University of Maryland and UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the sets has also toured the United States extensively and has previously been on display in London. \u003cbr/\u003eWarhol is one of the biggest names in modern art and prints of his paintings adorn many homes.  \u003cbr/\u003eA recent art auction in New York sold Warhol's painting \"Green Car Crash\" for more than $71 million dollars, breaking the record for the artist. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe portraits, 'Lemon Marilyn', sold at the same auction for $28,040,000 US dollars. \u003cbr/\u003ePreviously Warhol's \"Mao\" fetched 17.4 million (m) US dollars. at auction. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Weisman says he is not motivated to sell the paintings to raise money, the first person that offers him the asking price of �14.2 million ($28.24 million) will take the collection of ten home.\u003cbr/\u003eThree sets will remain in the Weisman family for his three children. \u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the most famous of all the sports stars depicted in the series is the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. \u003cbr/\u003eMartin Summers says that the Warhol and Ali's fame are of equal stature. \u003cbr/\u003eHephizbah Anderson, is London Evening Standard Art Critic. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says Warhol's success is that people who say that they don't understand art, can appreciate his message. \u003cbr/\u003eAnderson says that Warhol was a master of branding, and that each of his paintings has a recognisable 'Warholesque' style.
