Wide of seamstresses at work\u003cbr/\u003eDesigners in Georgia are giving traditional dress a modern twist in order to appeal to a new, younger audience. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're keen to reinvent the national outfit for today's well dressed Georgians, restoring a bit of national pride along the way.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is a catwalk show with a difference.\u003cbr/\u003eThe designs may have been created yesterday but they are based on 19th century originals.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 50 costumes were presented at the show in the capital Tbilisi with Georgian folk dancers parading and performing in front of an eager audience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 'Chokha' is the classic outfit for a man in the Caucasus region, and can be dated as far back as the 9th Century.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea of the show is to encourage Georgians to see their national costume as an elegant alternative to western dress for smart occasions.\u003cbr/\u003eEnthusiasts hope to recreate the drama and character of traditional outfits for both men and women, and help Georgians rediscover their heritage.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce a familiar sight, dressing up in traditional designs is now a rarity, reserved mainly for weddings or folk festivals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe show was organised by \"Samoseli Pirveli\" a clothing company founded by Levan Vasade and Luarsab Togonidze, old friends who share a  passion for Georgian tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eTheirs is a relatively new company. Their retail store opened last March but this is their first fashion show. \u003cbr/\u003eThe designers spent months carrying out historical research into the style and fabric of the costumes of the past. They studied photographs, museum exhibits and old films to create designs that look authentic but meet modern demands of fabric, comfort and fit. \u003cbr/\u003eLuarsab Togonidze explains the attraction: \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have a very rich culture of music and dance, but also of costume.  We have seen traditional costumes in the old photos or in the museums and our group always wandered what we can do to return it to the people; to have them use it in their everyday lives and not only see it in the movies or in photographs,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe price of a national costume varies from between 250 to 2000 Lari (approximately $140 to $1125USD).  Around 10 to 20 Chokha's are sold every month, but that figure doubles during the wedding season. There is also a big demand for accessories. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery region in Georgia had their own variation of Chokha style. That from south eastern Georgia is longer than others, has a V-neck and it is worn without a belt.  However the most popular style is the classic black and white outfit, the preferred choice of bridegrooms.  \u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally the Chokha is finished off with extras like ornamental daggers and cartridge belts that conjure up the image of the old fighting traditions of Georgian men.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Soviet era traditional Georgian costume was suppressed, worn only during performances of folk dances. \u003cbr/\u003eThe revival of national sentiment today parallels Georgia's rebuilding of its independent identity after the fall of Communism.\u003cbr/\u003eCostume designer Sopho Imerlishvili is adamant that old traditions and new techniques is a winning formula.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Nowadays, in creating all these costumes we are using new technologies and it gives the Chokha  a new look.  But we are not inventing anything new, everything is based on tradition.  But new materials, new techniques makes it look more modern.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe owners of Samoseli Pirveli hope she's right.
