Tom Andrews receiving gift as he leaves\u003cbr/\u003e  Airbus SA on Monday kicked off the race for plane orders at this year's Paris Air Show, which was clouded by rainy skies, recession and the unexplained crash of Air France Flight 447.\u003cbr/\u003e  With the global aviation industry facing unprecedented losses and falling revenue, no one attending the 100th anniversary of the world's first and largest air show was expecting Airbus or Boeing to unveil the raft of new jet orders that have been a staple of the event over the past four years.\u003cbr/\u003e  But Airbus scored its first order of the show from Qatar Airways, which wants 24 Airbus A320 jets.\u003cbr/\u003e  Qatar Airways' head, Akbar al-Baker announced a firm order for 24 of the planes at a news conference with Airbus CEO Tom Enders at the air show on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003e  The order includes 20 single-aisle A320s, as well as the confirmation of orders for four A321 jets announced last year at the Farnborough Air Show.\u003cbr/\u003e  Al-Baker said the deal was worth 1.9 (b) billion US dollars, which was about the same as the list price. \u003cbr/\u003e  Airlines usually negotiate steep discounts to the list price, particularly during grim economic times.\u003cbr/\u003e  Qatar Airways will take delivery of the first two aircraft before the end of the year, and the rest of the order by 2012. \u003cbr/\u003e  They will be used on regional, European and Indian subcontinent routes. \u003cbr/\u003e  During the news conference, al-Baker addressed last month's doomed Airbus A330 flight from Brazil to Paris.\u003cbr/\u003e  Investigators looking into the crash of Air France Flight 447 have so far focused on the possibility that external speed monitors - called Pitot tubes - iced over and gave false readings to the plane's computers. \u003cbr/\u003e  A pilots' union official said on Monday that Air France had replaced the air speed sensors on its entire fleet of Airbus A330 and A340 long-haul aircraft.\u003cbr/\u003e  Al-Baker said Qatar Airways had been in the process of replacing its Pitot tubes even before the accident.\u003cbr/\u003e  But, he added, \"We should not conclude anything from this accident, unfortunate accident that Air France had. It is still inconclusive, people still don't know what is the cause.\"\u003cbr/\u003e  Airbus chief Tom Enders emphasised the record of Airbus aircraft, describing the Airbus 330 as one of the safest aircraft ever built.\u003cbr/\u003e  He expressed the hope that the flight recorders of the doomed Air France plane would soon be found so that investigators could \"find out what really happened on
