Various of labour unionist protest near opera house\u003cbr/\u003eBritain's Queen Elizabeth II opened a new colonnade at the Sydney Opera House on Monday, more than three decades after she formally opened the landmark building.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people surrounded the opera house and sat on its steps in warm sunshine as the queen arrived.\u003cbr/\u003eThe queen opened the Western Colonnade, which runs along the side of the building, allowing light to flood in and giving people visiting the Opera House views of Sydney Harbour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 45-metre (150-foot) walkway is the first new addition to the building's exterior since it was completed in 1973 and was designed by the Opera House's Danish architect Joern Utzon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It confirms that the Opera House is not something sacred but a living structure, a vibrant and evolving place that meets the needs of its users and reflects the wishes of the people,\" the queen said.\u003cbr/\u003eUtzon left the project in 1966 amid bitter disputes with local authorities and cost blowouts and has never returned to Australia to see the finished building, which is recognised as his masterpiece and one of the most significant buildings of the 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003eUtzon's son Jan was on hand to see official opening. He said his father was now too old to make the long flight to Australia for Monday's opening. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter a military band played Britain's and Australia's national anthems, the crowd cheered and waved small Australian flags.\u003cbr/\u003eRepublicans who want to see the British monarch replaced as Australia's head of state by a locally chosen president were less welcoming.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralia became an independent state in 1901, but, like many former outposts of the British Empire such as Canada, it still recognises the queen as head of state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nation overwhelmingly voted against changing the country's constitutional monarchy into a republic in 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eBut republicans insist that Prime Minister John Howard, a staunch monarchist, ensured the referendum would fail by turning it into a confusing debate over how to elect a president.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the only protest on Monday was by a group of about 100 labour unionists demonstrating against recent government reforms to labour laws. \u003cbr/\u003eThe chanting protesters were led away by police before the queen's motorcade
