And, another day they came along and said, 'Women can become magistrates.'  Now, my question is this, 'Which one does true Islam support?  What does true Islam say?'  So if you really look at it from this approach, if you look at an ideology or religion from this approach, a lot of things become clearer.\" \u003cbr/\u003e9. Audience from back of auditorium\u003cbr/\u003eNobel Peace Prize winner, Iranian Shirin Ebadi, was in Washington on Monday to address members of the World Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eShe called upon the bank to make respect for human rights as a basic requirement for any loan to the goverment of an developing country.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi noted that in the past, loans had been made to governments that had no respect for human rights.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the loans were not paid back, after the money went into the pockets of the elites, she argued that this debt caused a lot of anger in those succeeding governments left to pay off the debt.\u003cbr/\u003eConsequently, the underdeveloped countries have been saddled under a crushing load of debt.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi also took a veiled swipe at attempts by the west to impose democracy on Middle Eastern countries through military means.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nobel Peace Prize winner suggested that democracy must come from within a country before it can achieve the desired result of protecting human rights.\u003cbr/\u003eOn a personal note, Ebadi said that some Islamic regimes claim to be following the Islamic declaration of human rights, but that this can sometimes lead to confusion.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said that she was removed from her job as a judge in Tehran because the mullahs said Islamic law prevented her from serving.\u003cbr/\u003eThirteen years later, the same mullahs returned to her and told her that Islamic law did allow woman to serve in the judiciary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe confusion, she said, comes when the mullahs say one thing one day and exactly the opposite the next.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi was in Washington to address the World Bank's conference on Human Rights and Economic Development.\u003cbr/\u003eShe won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her work for the rights of women and children.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi argues that Islam does have a positive role to play in human
