Various of refugees at the refugee camp\u003cbr/\u003eEast Timorese renegade soldier Major Alfredo Reinado has criticised the Australian presence in the country and says he will not surrender to the authorities who are hunting him down for his role in deadly violence that brought down the government last year, raising the risk of further unrest in Asia's newest nation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his first interview since last week's presidential elections in East Timor, Reinado told AP Television that the Timorese government want him dead, because he was considered a threat to them as long as he was alive.\u003cbr/\u003eHe spoke on condition that the date of his interview and his whereabouts not be revealed.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident-elect Jose Ramos-Horta declined to comment, but indicated he was willing to negotiate with Reinado, who is a key challenge to his authority in the desperately poor nation.\u003cbr/\u003eA former military police commander, Reinado is wanted for leading a group of 600 police and military officers to desert their posts last May.\u003cbr/\u003eReinado has always been an outspoken critic of the Australian peacekeeping forces dispatched to East Timor following the outbreak of violence last summer. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Australia is interfering in our judicial system. The raid on his hideout triggered rioting, leading to fears his arrest might prompt more violence.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite his remarks to the AP, analysts believe Reinado may be trying to negotiate a surrender behind the scenes to avoid jail time.\u003cbr/\u003eReinado dismissed last week's election that saw Nobel Peace Prize winner Ramos-Horta replace independence leader Xanana Gusmao as president. No,\" Reinado said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe police and military officers who deserted their posts last May complained of discrimination against servicemen from the western part of the country - which borders Indonesia - and believe they were denied promotions because of a perception that they had collaborated with the Indonesians during the occupation.\u003cbr/\u003eHis men clashed with loyalist forces in fighting that later spilled over into arson and gang warfare, in which at least 37 people died. It led to the collapse of the country's first government since it broke from Indonesian rule in 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was arrested in July and charged with murder, but escaped from prison a month later.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralian peacekeeping troops dispatched to the island following the violence have been hunting for Reinado. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo months ago, they raided his mountain hideout after surrounding it for several days, killing four of his followers, but Reinado managed to get away.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite his remarks to AP Television, analysts believe Reinado may be trying to negotiate a surrender behind the scenes to avoid jail time.\u003cbr/\u003eEast Timor was a Portuguese colony for more than three centuries before it was invaded by Indonesia in 1976.
