Bus driver driving bus\u003cbr/\u003eWith daily warnings of climate damage caused by carbon dioxide emissions, the transport authority in the UK capital city, London, have begun a new scheme to trial six environmentally friendly, hybrid vehicles. \u003cbr/\u003eThe buses are cleaner, quieter and use less fuel than a standard diesel bus -- making them better for the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is part of an ongoing programme that strives to implement technology that will help reduce emissions\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough this bus looks like most other buses in the UK, it's not. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a special hybrid bus that is partially being powered with electricity instead of pollution-causing diesel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe London Transport Authority has begun a new scheme to trial six environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles in their fleet of buses.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe vehicles, which are the first ever such vehicles in London, are cleaner, quieter and use less fuel than a standard diesel bus.\u003cbr/\u003eThis leads to a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe buses are part of the London Transport Authority's ongoing programme of testing new technologies that will reduce emissions.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well we have the largest bus fleet in the western world here in London - about 8000 buses running 700 bus routes and we're pushing forward with all sorts of environmental advances.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Graham Goodwin, Transport For London spokesperson\u003cbr/\u003eThe new hybrid buses will operate along side six normal diesel buses on one designated route in London.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two groups will be monitored over the coming months for performance, reliability and durability.  \u003cbr/\u003eIf they prove successful, London Buses will encourage their wider introduction into the fleet.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is without a doubt one of the most demanding urban environments in the world. The buses that we run our fleet run tens of thousands of miles a year, on very stop start cycles on very many of those routes. What we need to find out is, does this vehicle work in the environment in which it would have to work if we are going to invest in the future,\" said Goodwin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hybrid bus works has a 336 volt battery pack which provides power to the wheels via a 120Kw electric motor.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe battery pack is kept at optimum power by a 1.9 litre diesel Euro IV engine - the same engine which would normally be found in a family car.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the vehicle brakes for a bus stop, energy which would normally be wasted is also recycled and used to charge the battery.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith continuous charging of the battery, the bus gets more miles to the gallon than a regular bus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe buses' manufacturer hopes this will only be the beginning.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would like to see in the future that hybrid buses just become an everyday occurrence in every  city in the UK and across the world - reducing the emissions from the vehicles and producing much less carbon dioxide.
