It's a wonderful spacecraft. It has to hurt everybody to see it reach the end of its lifes pan. But, it's clear that everybody understands that it's approaching the end of its life span.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: David Wolf, NASA Astronaut\u003cbr/\u003eThat understanding may be a little harder to accept for Russia's Space Agency. \u003cbr/\u003eIts chief representative to NASA, Grigory Ossipov, who is based at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, says Mir's legacy will be its contribution to progress.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that a new space station wouldn't be possible without Mir.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's very hard to come up with an answer to this question (of Mir's legacy). Especially for something that is more or less tangible. Because knowledge is something that....it is pretty hard to count the number of units that compile this notion. But what we have achieved and what kind of experience have we gained? Well, at least we know how to build the vehicles that are going to fly for a long long time in outer space.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Grigory Ossipov, Director, Russian Space Agency Houston Operations\u003cbr/\u003eThe Russians have scheduled what is called a de-orbit burn of Mir's rockets in June of 1999, eventually forcing it to fall out of orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Ossipov says his agency will take a long, hard look at progress on the new space station, before committing to bringing MIR down. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the meantime, NASA officials are trying to put the best possible face on their role with Mir.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA and Russian cooperation with Mir was touted as the first step towards linking former Cold War enemies in what NASA calls Phase One of an effort to put a new space station in Earth orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that effort saw many hardships for NASA's astronauts serving on MIR.\u003cbr/\u003eThe toughest test came in 1997, with a rash of near disasters.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them, an on-board fire, a Mir collision with a Russian supply capsule and repeated failures of the computer.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the dangers, NASA's top official in the shuttle-Mir programme says the outcome was worth the risk. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Even though we didn't plan some of the more difficult problems we had, and who would have planned them, we experienced them successfully, we dealt with them successfully, we dealt with them as partners with the Russians, and we dealt with them internally better than I think we would have several years ago. So they in themselves are valuable lessons learned.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Frank Culbertson, Director, NASA  Phase One Program\u003cbr/\u003eThe man who will fly Discovery to Mir one more time agrees those risks were worth taking, even if they meant straining U-S-Russian relations to breaking point.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"So we've gone through some tough times operationally together, and that's built a lot of trust that I don't think anybody would deny really wasn't there in the beginning.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Charles Precourt, Shuttle Discovery Commander.\u003cbr/\u003eSome critics of the  effort say there is still serious mistrust between the two space agencies.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say that the lack of trust, and internal problems with Russia's space programme, jeopardise the new space station operation that is already delayed and over budget.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after more than 10 years in space, NASA officials say it's time to bring Mir's life to an end. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd they've made it clear to their Russian counterparts that the experience gained by working together on Mir will override any problems that linger between the two agencies.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's time, says NASA, to let go of Mir, and they believe their Russian partners have got the message.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"They've made the commitment already.
