Armed militias took control of many cities, the people's faith in their government has deteriorated. Political and economic issues have also deteriorated and also gaps arose between the different political camps.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJanuary 25th - the so-called National Dialogue talks draw to a close.\u003cbr/\u003eThe long-running negotiations have brought together rival groups and delegates from across Yemen to discuss a new political system for the country.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir priority is to draw up a new constitution in the wake of the country's 2011 uprising.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's also hoped the agreement will ease tensions between north and south.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some leaders - including the Houthi representative - have boycotted the talks.\u003cbr/\u003eHassan Zaid, Yemeni Minister of State, says: \"I think that the most important event was the agreement, which I hope will continue and reach its final stage, which the Ansar Allah group and the Yemeni assembly for reform had signed. Also, I hope that the negative developments between the north and south would stop through a general national agreement.\"\u003cbr/\u003eApril - US air strikes kill nine suspected al-Qaida militants and three civilians.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Yemeni forces stage a two-day assault on the extremists in the south of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government claims 55 militants are killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe strikes in al-Bayda and surrounding provinces appear to be a significant escalation in the US and Yemeni campaign against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.\u003cbr/\u003eJuly 7th and Yemen's president orders a raft of austerity measures to reduce pressure on the country's poor public finances.\u003cbr/\u003eThe impoverished state has forecast a budget deficit of around 679 billion rials (3.16 billion US dollars) this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe belt-tightening measures include a recruitment freeze at all state institutions and curbs on foreign travel by government officials.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the government struggling to provide basic services amid an ongoing war against militants, fuel shortages have become the most visible sign of Yemen's plight.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the measures are not welcomed by the public. \u003cbr/\u003eOn July 30th anger erupts on the streets of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, after the government almost doubles fuel prices.\u003cbr/\u003eThe administration says the price hike is an attempt to reform subsidies and narrow a budget deficit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country has spent nearly three billion US dollars this year so far on fuel subsidies, roughly 20 percent of state expenditure, according to a Finance Ministry statement carried by Yemen's official news agency SABA. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Yemenis say the price hike creates more economic suffering for ordinary people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe burning street barricades are part of scattered demonstrations against the government's decision.\u003cbr/\u003eTroops quickly disperse the protesters, but not before a person is killed and several injured.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the unrest is not over. \u003cbr/\u003eOn September 9th police open fire on the protesters as they head towards the Prime Minister's office.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the demonstrators march up to the government headquarters, the police first fire tear gas to try to disperse the crowds, they then reportedly begin shooting.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Human Rights Watch, at least seven are killed, including an ambulance driver.\u003cbr/\u003eViolence in the capital continues for several more weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eShiite rebels and Sunni militia clash.\u003cbr/\u003eMortar shells damage buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 140 are killed.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a UN-brokered peace deal offers a chance of peace.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 21st Houthis seize control of strategically important installations in the capital including the Defence Ministry, the Central Bank, a key military base and the Iman University.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the same day Yemeni government officials and Shiite rebels sign the Peace and Partnership agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eIt calls for an immediate ceasefire and the formation of a technocratic government within a month after consultations with all political parties.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the government pledges to bring back fuel subsidies.\u003cbr/\u003eNovember 9th - a new government is sworn in.\u003cbr/\u003eKhaled Bahah was nominated as prime minister as part of the UN-brokered deal.\u003cbr/\u003eAll Yemeni parties and political groups agreed on an independent technocrat cabinet earlier this month.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the General People's Congress party, led by former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his allies, the Houthi group have already withdrawn their support.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because of the UN Security Council has approved sanctions against Saleh and two Houthi rebel commanders.\u003cbr/\u003eOn November 30th thousands of demonstrators call for independence for South Yemen.\u003cbr/\u003eThey wave the region's flag on the streets of Aden.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Southern Movement, also known as Al-Hirak al-Janoubi, is leading the calls - and has been organising protests in Aden for several months.\u003cbr/\u003eIn December the Yemeni parliament approves the new government with a comfortable majority.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the task ahead of them for 2015 is daunting.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the public are hoping to move away from the violence that has blighted the last twelve months.\u003cbr/\u003eYoussef Hamid, a Yemeni citizen, says \"The year 2014 was full of events and surprises.
