Close-up of death-row prisoner's hand in fence\u003cbr/\u003eThe US American Bar Association on Monday called for a temporary freeze on the death penalty due to what it said were flaws in the system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ABA said serious problems in state death penalty systems compromised fairness and accuracy and justified a nationwide freeze on executions.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a report just released, the ABA said a variety of factors led it to conclude that a moratorium on the death penalty was necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ABA cited spotty collection and preservation of DNA evidence, which was used to exonerate more than 200 inmates; misidentification by witnesses; false confessions from defendants as well as racial disparities that made death sentences more likely when victims were white.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report was a compilation of separate reviews done over the past three years of how the death penalty operates in eight states: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.\u003cbr/\u003eLegal teams that studied the systems in Arizona, Florida and Pennsylvania did not call for a halt to executions in those states. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the ABA said every state with the death penalty should review its execution procedures before putting anyone else to death.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problems found in these assessments strike at the very heart of our justice system,\" said Stephen F.
