I think it surprised us actually. We had to go into another corridor and block it off so nobody could come and see. We didn't see it that way, it was just what we did. That's why it's quite interesting, you know, this time around, you know, to think of what is around. What are the fashions, what's the... What's going to be the element of this particular time that's going to appear in this dress? And it's probably more difficult to guess what it might be you know. It really could be anything. I think it's lovely the brides always try to want to make a statement and I think that's really important, you know, to be a little bit different. At the same time it's a royal wedding dress so there's certain things that have to be classic. I think, you know, it's part of history so it's very important that it's right. That's the thing. Crowds cheer and wave flags\u003cbr/\u003eOnly a handful of insiders know which designer Kate Middleton has chosen to create her top-secret wedding gown, but at least one person - dressmaker Elizabeth Emanuel - understands what that person is going through.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman who co-designed the taffeta confection that Princess Diana wore in 1981 when she walked down the aisle to marry Prince Charles believes Middleton's mystery designer is probably more than a bit anxious as the April 29 royal wedding approaches.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You really don't get a second chance with these kind of dresses, you know, you have to get it right.\" said Emanuel, in her central London studio, surrounded by mannequins wearing dramatic handmade wedding gowns. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For any designer something like this is just amazing because immediately they become the focal point of the world's attention, you know. But from a career point of view it's wonderful, you know and I'm, it will really propel them and speed up things beyond their dreams I'm sure.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEmanuel and her ex-husband David triumphed in their own pressure-packed moment, coming up with a show-stopping gown that transformed Diana from a little-known nursery school teacher into a glamorous princess.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dress was groundbreaking for its tight bodice, cinched waist and what seemed like miles and miles of taffeta, silk and lace.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time around no one knows for sure who is behind the dress.\u003cbr/\u003eThere have been leaks suggesting that Sarah Burton, creative director of the Alexander McQueen house, is designing Middleton's dress, but she has denied the reports - though some believe she may be covering up her involvement to maintain secrecy.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the two brides are very different: Diana was still in her teens when she married, and she had not yet plunged into the fashion world. \u003cbr/\u003eMiddleton is 29 and has developed her own style, which emphasizes her slender figure, pale skin, and dark brown hair.\u003cbr/\u003eFashions have changed as well, with softer fabrics like tulle and organza more popular in gowns than the stiffer taffeta used in Diana's dress. \u003cbr/\u003eThere also may be fewer frills, and less volume in the skirt.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That dress really reflected the '80s and New Romance,\" says Emanuel of her famous design.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And at the time we didn't think it particularly reflective of the '80s. We didn't see it that way, it was just what we did. That's why it's quite interesting, this time around, to think of what is around. What are the fashions?...  What's going to be the element of this particular time that's going to appear in this dress? And it's probably more difficult to guess what it might be you know. It really could be anything.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEmanuel remembers her own time in the spotlight as a blur. \u003cbr/\u003eShe and David worked around the clock, even making the bridesmaids' dresses and backup gowns for emergency use by Diana in case the press discovered the real design ahead of time.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were endless fittings with the incredible shrinking bride - Diana lost so much weight in the weeks before the ceremony that the designers had to make several successively smaller bodices.\u003cbr/\u003eShe had a 23-inch waist by her wedding day.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Emanuel said they only got to see the gown's 25-foot (7.6-meter) train at the final fitting, when they had room to unroll it at Buckingham Palace.\u003cbr/\u003eShe remembers reporters constantly begging her for information, making up sob stories about how they would be fired if they didn't find out details about the dress. \u003cbr/\u003eThat was in the quaint, pre-Internet era. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Secrecy is really important and because everybody knew that we were doing the dress we had a lot of press that would come around and we were aware that the people were going through the bins to see if there's any fabric, sort of threads or anything,\" she recalls.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We'd leave false trails everywhere and we had people who rented office space opposite us peering through their long range telescopes and cameras, so it was difficult.
