distribution, a popular Internet page and a range of domestic newspapers and magazines.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the People's Daily media empire is battling for maintain its place in a country saturated with thousands of publications, each one determined to take the lead in a highly competitive market.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the Marxist membership of China's communist party had a Bible it would be the People's Daily, or Renmin Ribao, a newspaper whose words are seen as a guiding light for the nation's 67 million party members.\u003cbr/\u003eLike most publications, this 12-page daily broadsheet rolls off the press each morning before dawn at the paper's sprawling office complex in eastern Beijing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut unlike most newspapers the People's Daily is not available on newsstands.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's three million circulation is delivered by subscription only.\u003cbr/\u003eWith its dense editorial content the People's Daily aims to set an example of political correctness in the name of Party chairman, Jiang Zemin and rising star, Hu Jin Tao, the man being groomed to take the helm of the party.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"great helmsman\" himself, Mao Zedong, whose calligraphy is immortalised in the paper's Renmin Ribao title, remains the publication's model of political perfection.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder his stewardship, the newspaper reported China declaring victory over U-S imperialism during the Vietnam war.\u003cbr/\u003eStories of anti-American demonstrations still make headlines, as they did during the Chinese reaction to the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eBut two decades of Chinese economic reform have unleashed new dangers in the form of rampant corruption and declining moral values which threaten the communist party.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople's Daily editors say their work is not easy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe party is empowering a new generation of young journalists to meet China's new economic and political challenges.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of their new tools is the Internet with People Dot Com the digital face of the Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003eIt draws it's content from sixteen various publications to attract young viewers with a flashy mix of news, sport and entertainment.\u003cbr/\u003eEditors monitor content and keep a watchful eye on unrestrained chat room activity, while open criticism of party leaders is not tolerated. \u003cbr/\u003eParty membership is compulsory for writers at the People's Daily.  \u003cbr/\u003eReporters take pride in their work and enjoy the privileges of association with an elite and powerful group.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the information age, competition for the public's attention is fierce, and the historically long reach of People's Daily is
