Pull focus on flower in garden
Caffeine in tea, and coffee often provides a vital boost of energy at the start of the day, or at work, but this active ingredient might one day help fight diseases like Parkinson's.
An international team of scientists at Lisbon University has been looking into studies exploring how much coffee we drink and the risk of getting the debilitating disease.
There may well be an added incentive to waking up and smelling the coffee according to the scientists.
These beans might be able to unlock chemical secrets which affect parts of our brains which could put some of us at risk of diseases which can ruin our lives and the lives of our families.
Parkinson's can stop our bodies and minds functioning properly.
The Portuguese team looked at twenty-six previously published studies on coffee consumption.
They found a direct link between the amount of coffee drunk and the degree of protection against developing Parkinson's.
The conclusion being that two to three cups of this each day could decrease the risk of developing the condition by as much as a quarter in men and about 14% in women.
What the scientists still don't know is whether it is precisely the caffeine that's responsible for increasing this apparent protection against Parkinson's.
It might turn out to be something else in the coffee, or possibly a host of different factors.
For people who've already developed strong physical signs of the disease, the most important question will be whether drinking coffee can slow down, even reverse the condition which they must confront each day.
When Robert Taylor was diagnosed twelve years ago he had a carpentry business.
The muscles in his forearms were tightening up.
Tasks that were everyday were becoming arduous and then impossible.
It became difficult to deal with loud noises and concentrating was hard, both serious drawbacks when working in a potentially dangerous workshop with saws and drills.
The disease kills the nerve cells in parts of the brain which control movement.
Because the nerve cells are dead this part of the brain doesn't work properly.
So Parkinson's patients move slowly, often they have an abnormal posture and sometimes they have tremors.
Just putting one foot in front of another can be a feat.
Taylor uses a laser walking stick to help him concentrate and focus.
These physical symptoms appear first, but as time goes on patients can also experience serious problems with memory, learning and mood as well.
Taylor has to take a fistful of tablets to keep the symptoms under control, but they're far from perfect and getting the right balance is difficult.
He says "you kind of fluctuate. The drugs work. They work too much and then you get spurious movements and things, or they don't work at all, or they work very little and it's very difficult to walk, (or) think even."
Scientists such as Professor Kieran Breen at the charity Parkinsons UK are always looking at funding potentially successful new research, but while he welcome's it he tempers hope with caution.
According to Professor Breen "caffeine resembles another chemical in the brain which has various different properties, so the question we want to ask now is "does caffeine act in the same way as this other chemical?"
He says if so, there might be "some way we can harness this to develop new agents which will actually cure, or which will actually treat Parkinson's, rather than the current drugs which treat the symptoms of Parkinson's."
The chemical Breen's talking about is Adenosine, a relatively new discovery in the scientist's growing armoury against disease, but little is known about it.
But there are early clinical trials on some drugs which influence adenosine which may influence the symptoms of Parkinson's.
To go further scientists like Breen believe it's necessary to look certain aspects of people's lifestyle everyday for a period of time.
That way the can see exactly what people are exposed to and they can calculate exactly how much coffee and other drinks they're consuming and correlate it with things like caffeine and other chemicals.
Not much has changed inside the coffee shop George Haji Constinou opened over thirty years ago, except the amount he sells.
His tiny little shop is constantly busy roasting and grinding to keep up with the customers.
With growing demand from locals and restaurateurs he can shift three sacks, more than two hundred kilos, each week.
Streets on cities around the world are lined with coffee shops and there are signs that despite the rise in global prices, it seems all of us are becoming part of the caf society.
Robin Smith is regular at this caf.
His father suffered Parkinson's and despite his own daily consumption of coffee he's sceptical about such studies.
Smith says he has a cup when he wakes, arrives at work, at lunchtime, an afternoon coffee and a final one in the evening.
He says he has a coke too.
He says he cut down on the coke, not because of the caffeine, but because of the sugar.
Constinou isn't entirely surprised at the claims being made on behalf of coffee.
Growing up in Cypress his grandmother used it as a cure all.
He says "I used to play football I used to scratch my knees, that's falling on the ground. There was no grass in Cypress, unfortunately in those days (laughter) and I used to go to my grandma and she used to put coffee on my wounds and they used to heal."
According to Constinou some of his customers are eastern women who use it on their skin.
There's no scientific evidence that coffee has either of these properties.
But coffee has been growing for centuries and people have been using it for as long.
Breen points out that the accuracy of the study is tainted by the fact that it was done in retrospect.
This means people were asked about their habits in the past and their recall might not be one hundred per cent true.
He believes the latest results represent the strongest evidence so far that caffeine may have some protective effects against developing Parkinson's.
But he advises against vastly increasing our intake of coffee simply to get protection from Parkinson's.
He argues drinking too much coffee may even cause other health problems.
One research area Parkinson's UK is focussing on is biomarkers to try to identify people who are at higher risk of Parkinson's before they get the symptoms of damaged movement.
The charity aims to fund the development of procedures and medicines which "treat the condition, rather than the symptoms".
Breen says this would "influence whether, or not the nerve cells die. Slow it down and halt it, even reverse it. Then if we can identify people who are more at risk of getting Parkinson's, that's when we can give those drugs."
But treating and defeating Parkinson's by identifying damaged nerve cells before any the occurrence of any symptoms is a long way off.
Taylor warns against pinning hopes on something unproven in the future.
He says it's important that people try to do improve their condition as much as they can.
He says "a lot of Parkinson's people, they hate themselves, or they don't hate themselves, they hate the disease, or they hate the afflictions that it causes and they despair of all things they've lost in life and the really big kick for me was realising what I have got."
Taylor is teaching other
