Various of Stone rabbit eating from Acacia tree
33. Zoom in to Ibex
Many of the Middle East's most protected animals are under threat from a man made barrier.
The arid West Bank desert of Wadi Qelt is the natural habitat for ibexes (wild goats with long curved horns), stone rabbits, hyenas and foxes.
However, a coalition of Israeli and Palestinian activists has begun working together to save the local wildlife.
The peace and quiet of the arid desert is home to a wide variety of protected animals.
Wild goats called ibexes and stone rabbits can be seen grazing in the early morning sun at the Ein Gedi nature reserve, which borders the eastern Judean Desert and the Dead Sea.
But in some places the wildlife is being threatened by a human conflict.
In order to prevent Palestinian attacks, Israel has been building a separation barrier that cuts through the Wadi Qelt canyon in the West Bank.
The barrier threatens to cut off many of the region's natural residents from their water supply.
Now, Jewish settlers have joined forces with Israeli and Palestinian activists, in order to put a stop to the barrier, saying the fence could destroy the area's wildlife.
Avrham Shaked, the regional director in Jerusalem for the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), says the barrier is threatening the ecological diversity of the region.
Wadi Qelt lies in one of the most contested regions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and both sides view the barrier as a threat.
Palestinians see it as a possible Israeli attempt to gain control of the West Bank, by looping the barrier around the Maaleh Adumim settlement.
Jewish settlers, on the other hand, believe it will lead to the surrendering of the 90% of West Bank territory that is expected to lie on the other side of the fence.
The environment issue is providing rare common ground for adversaries, with environmental activists leading the charge.
Imad Atrash, of the Palestine Wildlife Society, says the fence is a tragedy for the animals that live in the region.
So far, Israel has completed nearly two-thirds of the proposed 490 miles of electronic fence and concrete walls.
Unless some type of compromise is reached, the canyon of Wadi Qelt will soon be divided by 7.5 miles of fence.
Already there are few animals to be seen in Wadi Qelt.
But the region's native stone rabbits and ibexes can be spotted more easily in the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, which borders the eastern Judean Desert and the Dead Sea.
Atrash says the region's animals need to have enough space to search for food and water.
With a fence dividing the canyon, he says that many mammals will surely die.
Roee Simon, a Jewish settler living in the area and environmental activist, says the barrier is a mistake, and the alternatives have not been explored.
For now, the proposed route of the barrier is set to encompass the region's only major stream, which means any animals on the West Bank would be cut off from their water supply.
According to security officials, Israelis largely supported the building of the barrier when construction began in 2002.
They credit the barrier with a dramatic decrease in the number of deadly bombings.
Now, however, in light of the environmental cost, activists have been gaining support.
As an alternative to the barrier, some naturalists have requested that authorities monitor the Wadi Qelt region with surveillance cameras in place of a fence.
In Wadi Fukin, a central area of the West Bank, Israel's Supreme Court actually halted work on the barrier after the Israeli-Palestinian branch of Friends of the Earth argued it would destroy the area's natural springs.
3,000 Palestinians depend on the springs to irrigate beans, radishes and parsley.
The springs are also a crucial water supply for Wadi Fukin's wildlife population.
Keyword animals

<button
