Ninety-two percent of the Japanese public said they didn't know so that's a big information gap. What the Japanese government claims here is that all the Japanese people are supporting this whaling. However if you ask questions about it in Japan a lot of people don't know about it, so I think that needs to be addressed here and our position as Greenpeace Japan we really want to show that gap so that Japanese people know the illustration.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Wide of conference\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Whaling Commission on Tuesday approved extending bowhead whaling quotas for Alaska\u003cbr/\u003eEskimos for subsistence hunting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 76-nation commission voted by consensus to allow 280 bowhead whales to be taken over a five-year period, ending in 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eA majority of those, 260 bowheads, are reserved for Alaska natives in 10 villages, with 20 bowheads granted to Russians.\u003cbr/\u003eThe five-year extension received the support of Japan, which is also trying to secure quotas for some of its coastal communities.\u003cbr/\u003eJoji Morishita, the alternate IWC commissioner for Japan said consistency was the keyword in the discussion.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan has long sought \"community whaling\" status, which would give it quotas under provisions similar to those that allow Alaska natives and other indigenous groups to hunt the mammals.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was not immediately clear when the IWC would take up Japan's request.\u003cbr/\u003eChris Carter, delegate from New Zealand, said he told Japan that his country was against any form of commercial whaling.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I reiterated the point that I made to the Japanese when I first suggested the dialogue yesterday, that this dialogue can only take place on the basis that New Zealand can never agree to any form of commercial whaling,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We absolutely support the moratorium on commercial whaling and we continue to do so. who heavily rely on the meat to fill their tables.\u003cbr/\u003eCeremonial dances are held to bless the hunts and successful harvests prompt village celebrations where the meat is cut up and to Greenland's minke whale quotas.\u003cbr/\u003eCommission chairman Bill Hogarth of the United States recommended that Denmark, of which Greenland is a semiautonomous territory, meet with other delegations before putting the matter to a vote.\u003cbr/\u003eIn closed-door talks Tuesday, Japan's Morishita met with representatives from anti-commercial whaling nations, including New Zealand, Australia and the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eMorishita could not be reached for comment afterward. \u003cbr/\u003eNew Zealand commissioner Chris Carter said the two sides agreed to continue their
