The Snake Charmers Federation of India estimates there are about 800-thousand charmers still working.\u003cbr/\u003eCharmers say a wildlife protection law, passed eight years ago, is further threatening the tradition that is often passed on from father to son. \u003cbr/\u003eA charmers federation officials says the government should also set up serum farms where charmers could use their expertise in handling snakes to extract venom for medical use.\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that the organization believes that only snake charmers can save the snakes. \u003cbr/\u003eAnimal rights activists say that snake charming is a cruel practice because the animals sometimes have their mouths sewn shut, fangs removed or venom glands pierced to protect their handlers.\u003cbr/\u003eSnakes are deaf and their \"dancing\" movement is a self-defense response to vibrations they perceive as threatening.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wildlife Protection Society of India say the ban should be upheld because it has
