structure measuring over 17 metres and weighing around 73 tons.\u003cbr/\u003eHoused in the Grand Palais, the artists says he hopes to give audiences a new visual experience.\u003cbr/\u003eBeneath the delicate glass and filigree metal dome of Paris' Grand Palais, five steel monoliths, rust-brown and pockmarked, reach for the sky.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're the work of celebrated American sculptor Richard Serra, who manages to infuse large, earthy pieces with an almost airy lightness.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is a real feat, considering they each stand at 76 feet (17 meters) tall and weigh 73 tons. \u003cbr/\u003eLined up in a row along the Grand Palais' centre axis, the sculptures appear to balance effortlessly, if precariously.\u003cbr/\u003eIt looks like a single puff of air would suffice to send them toppling over onto the concrete floor, like a giant's domino set.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors milling under the sculptures are dwarfed by the towering steel structures.\u003cbr/\u003eSerra says he built the monoliths especially for the space in the Grand Palais.\u003cbr/\u003eAll five plates, as Serra refers to them, measure the same size and only differ slightly in the angle they lean.\u003cbr/\u003eTogether the works form a single piece, entitled \"Promenade.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSerra says there is no set way to look at the structures.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Serra's new solo show in the cavernous riverside hall.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilt for the 1900 World's Fair, the hall recently underwent a 12-year renovation to anchor the edifice to a slab of bedrock with thousands of concrete columns.\u003cbr/\u003eSerra says he had no idea if the works suited the scale of the venue, or whether audiences would make sense of his sculptures.\u003cbr/\u003eNonetheless, filling the building's 145,000-square-foot space seems to have come together.\u003cbr/\u003eIt took two cranes and a crew of seven more than a week to install the pieces.\u003cbr/\u003eSerra says when the first structure went up, he realised the venue was suitable for his works.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike some previous venues, which required special floor reinforcements to support Serra's weighty works, the Grand Palais needed no touch ups.\u003cbr/\u003eEven the doors were big enough to accommodate \"Promenade,\" which was hauled in from Germany on a flatbed truck.\u003cbr/\u003eSerra says he hopes the structures
