known as Tsavorite.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s being mined by hand in Kenya -- three hundred and fifty kilometres (two hundred and eighteen miles) east of the capital Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003eKenya is famed for it''s beautiful landscapes -- and it''s wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd now it''s set to become even more popular for its gemstones.\u003cbr/\u003eOne relatively newly discovered stone in particular, the Tsavorite, is capturing the eyes of commercial jewellers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe stone, named after the nearby Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, was formed when tremendous pressure and heat were applied for million of years on rocks, according to it''s discoverer Campbell Bridges.\u003cbr/\u003eGeologist Campbell Bridges was hiding in a ditch escaping from a wild buffalo when he first encountered a green, sparkling gem in 1961.\u003cbr/\u003eThe encounter in pre-independence Zimbabwe fired his search for gem, a member of the green garnet family.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven years later he became the first man to record the discovery in Tanzania of gemstone-quality Tsavorite. \u003cbr/\u003eLater he opened this mine in Kenya at Mindi-Kandashi.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause deposits of the gem are small and fragile, Tsavorite stones are mined by hand. \u003cbr/\u003eMiners blasting rocks with dynamite use hammerjacks to get closer to deposits before finally chiselling on the reef to reach the prized stones.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gems are then sifted, sorted and washed -- before being transported to Bridges'' office and workshop in Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003eThere they are turned from their rough state into the smooth gemstone that will eventually be used in jewellery.\u003cbr/\u003eTsavorite is one of the youngest green gemstones in the world but is as hard as one of the oldest, the emerald. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Tsavorite is at least two hundred times rarer, much tougher, less brittle, more durable and is twice as brilliant as emeralds -- all attractive qualities to jewellers.\u003cbr/\u003eGemstone-quality Tsavorites have so far been mined only in Tanzania and Kenya. \u003cbr/\u003eThe stone has high level of light refraction and dispersion, making it exceptionally lively and brilliant. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s also one of the few gemstones that is not treated in any way.\u003cbr/\u003eOften stones are heated, oiled, dyed or coated to enhance colour, remove impurities and hide cracks as well as other flaws. \u003cbr/\u003eIt costs between nine hundred to two-thousand US dollars per carat in jewel shops.\u003cbr/\u003eTsavorite''s rarity, ironically, undermines its price because high-end jewellers are unable to launch profitable promotion campaigns, since they are not guaranteed large quantities of the bigger stones.\u003cbr/\u003eBridges says he is very conscious of the environmental impact of mining and tries to be as unobtrusive as possible when setting up a
