It has entertained audiences for centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso known as a passion play, it''s a theatrical expression of religious passion, set to music and based on the Battle of Karbala - between the Arabian Yazid I and supporters of Hussein ibn Ali - Muhammad''s grandson. \u003cbr/\u003eThe performance is part of the Fajr Theatre Festival in Tehran where visitors enjoy a mix of Ta''zieh, comedy, puppetry and European drama. \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival is an annual 10 day event, held in late January to celebrate the anniversary of Iran''s 1979 Islamic Revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring this period, various genres of theatre are performed by both Iranian and foreign artists in the streets and auditoriums of capital.\u003cbr/\u003eStory-telling or narration of epical poems and prose cited in famous works of Persian literature such as the Ferdowsi''s Shahnameh (935 A.D.) has been popular for centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eIran is also a land of puppeteers.  Puppets are known to have existed in the country earlier than 1000 CE. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother ancient Iranian type of theatre is Ru-Howzi (over the water pool). Largely comedic, Ru-Howzi is traditionally performed at wedding celebrations. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past, in many Iranian houses there would a small water pool. When there was a celebration comedians would cover the pool with wooden platforms and perform for guests.\u003cbr/\u003eTheatre director, Hadi Marzban has brought his play \"Water Thief\" to the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eMarzban believes that Iranian theatre performers have been successful in advertising Iranian culture to the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When our theatre, the Iranian theatre is seen all over the world, you can see that our theatre is advertising our culture, values and elements of our society in the world,\" he says.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe first western style theatre in Iran was performed in 1886. At that time, theatre scripts were a translation of European dramas and audiences were made up entirely of staff from the monarch''s palace. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in today''s Iran some critics still believe that Iranian artists acting out Western scripts is detrimental for Iranian culture. \u003cbr/\u003eMarzban disagrees. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Theatre has its own place in our history. The play is about suppressed Palestinians in the the Gaza Strip. \u003cbr/\u003eActor and production manager, Roberto Veverica says many countries are inspired by Iranian theatre, especially in puppetry.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"I know they are really famous.
