It just seemed like so out of reach... And then when I moved down to London, you know, Francis Bacon was a hero of mine, I looked at his paintings, I thought he was great, you know I was painting myself and I just made bad copies of Bacon's. And so I sort of sidestepped into sort of sculpture, which came a bit more naturally to me. And when I came to London he was actually around so I sort of saw him. Bacon was born in Dublin in 1909 and died in Madrid in 1992, aged 82.
Exhibition highlights include his infamous portraits of Pope Innocent X and celebrated triptychs such as Three Studies for a Crucifixion, 1962.
Sixty five of the artist's works are on display at the Tate, arranged over 10 rooms.
They reflect the development of Bacon's career, which began in 1928 after a brief period as an interior decorator.
But there's little from Bacon's early days in Paris and London - the artist destroyed most of his early work. The show opens with 1940s paintings brimming with horror and absurdity. There are bestial human figures, contorted bodies and screaming mouths displaying jagged teeth.
Among the exhibited works are:
Study after Velzquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X, 1953; Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, 1944; and In Memory of George Dyer, 1971.
The latter forms part of a number of triptychs which Bacon painted following the suicide of his lover, George Dyer, in Paris in 1971.
The two are rumoured to have met when Bacon caught Dyer robbing his apartment in Kensington in 1964. At the time homosexuality was illegal in England and Wales.
For the last sixteen years of Bacon's life his closest friend was John Edwards. When the artist died he made Edwards the sole heir to his paintings and properties.
Edwards was the model for at least 30 of Bacon's late portraits.
Alexis Parr, a friend millions of pounds on the walls.
Today, Bacon is widely acknowledged as one of the most prominent artists of 20th-century art, with works such as his Triptych, 1976 selling for $86 million USD at auction, which is a record-breaking figure for a post-war work of art.
Bacon influenced many younger artists, including Lucien Freud, who shares a penchant for painting bruised and mottled flesh, and Damien Hirst, whose pickled sharks and rotting cows' heads show a similar fascination with corporeal decay.
Hirst, a multimillionaire Brit art star, who reportedly spent US$33 million last year on a Bacon self-portrait, says the older man was "a hero" when he was starting out as an artist.
This exhibition is the third retrospective
