Close-up Salman Rushdie with pan across movie cast\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's book publishing industry is said to be thriving despite the rise in digital reading .\u003cbr/\u003eFootfalls at the country's premier literature festival in Jaipur have been growing by nearly 30 percent every year , making it one of the most successful book events in the world.  \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of authors and tens of thousands of book lovers descend on the city of Jaipur to celebrate the art of literature. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the agenda here, panel discussions on subjects ranging from myth, religion, art,  architecture, films and music to the Arab Spring and economics. \u003cbr/\u003eSessions featuring authors of bestsellers like 'Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother', Amy Chua, Bollywood screen writers and poets like Javed Akhtar are popular. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it is the success of the literary festival as a business model that has caught the attention of the Harvard business school.\u003cbr/\u003eA case study done by the school on the event is being taught in the current academic year, and is expected to be on the curriculum next year.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers say the mantra behind the festival's growing size and status is three-fold - keep the event free for the book-lovers , get celebrity writers to attend and most importantly get big business to sponsor the sessions.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut they are also hoping that the numbers will soon stabilise as managing the swelling crowds of book enthusiasts is an \"incredible logistical nightmare.\" according to  Sanjoy Roy , whose company Teamwork productions , handles the festival logistics.\u003cbr/\u003e \"We continue to look at a 30 per cent growth in each year instead of growth by 100 percent. It's an incredible logistical nightmare...there are hundreds of people working behind the scenes on this festival , truly hundreds of people ,\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe celebrity quotient of the festival reached its peak when the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey made an appearance at the jam-packed venue.\u003cbr/\u003eWinfrey , who recommended titles and authors through her book club, is credited with reviving the reading habit among her audience and turning recommended  books into overnight bestsellers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn India, book sales have been growing by about 5 percent every year according to a study of the Indian book market by PricewaterhouseCooper.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a major book publishing country , with an estimated 19,000 publishing houses generating content in more than 24 regional languages.\u003cbr/\u003eBook stalls and a reading room set up by the British Council are some of the most popular hangout zones at the festival .\u003cbr/\u003eBook lovers , both young and old , haved an array of authors to choose from to rediscover real and imaginary worlds through the printed word. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers of the Jaipur Literature festival say the event creates new readership every year by facilitating direct interaction between the authors and their readers.\u003cbr/\u003eDigital devices offering e-books are beginning to make its presence felt in the Indian market.\u003cbr/\u003e15-year old Shubham Sharma is a grade ten student at a Jaipur school.\u003cbr/\u003eLike most middle-class , English-speaking teenagers growing up in India's big cities , Sharma owns an iPad and has a computer at home.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile he enjoys the smell of fresh ink in a newly printed book , he is increasingly drawn to reading in the digital space which offers instant access to everything -  anywhere , anytime.    \u003cbr/\u003e \"So from the iPad I can buy it and read it wherever I am free. So I just need to click and log in and buy a book and just read it,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with the internet penetration is still rather low in India and digital reading devices unaffordable for most , e-books have a long way to go before posing a serious threat to the  book publishing industry.  \u003cbr/\u003e \"I don't have any fears that this will ever be a risk , in India. We are a different phenomenon , we have so many thousands of publications in print , while publication is a dying industry across the world,\" says Roy.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthor of seven books about India and the Islamic world , Scottish born William Dalrymple is one of the founder directors of the Jaipur festival. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers who travelled to Jaipur this year include popular names like Deepak Chopra, Jamaica Kincaid, Lionel Shriver,Richard Dawkins ,Tom Stoppard , Michael Ondaatje and Hanif Kureishi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival also provides a platform for publishers looking for talent and writers looking for book deals.\u003cbr/\u003eBooker-prize winner Nigerian author and poet Ben Okri is here too, reading from his book in front of thousands of fans.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the publicity is not a major factor in the sale of book titles.  \u003cbr/\u003e \" The writer works on the mind and on the consciousness , not on the eyes. Salman Rushdie brought in many curious visitors looking for his books.\u003cbr/\u003e Rushdie had originally planned to attend the festival despite opposition from some Muslims who consider his 1988 book \"The Satanic Verses\" blasphemous.\u003cbr/\u003eA video conference with the author was then planned, but it too was cancelled due to protests and threats.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year , the Jaipur Literature festival played host to nearly two hundred and fifty authors, poets and film makers to celebrate the written word and demystify the writer.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers say an estimated 125,000
