Prosecution walks away\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial of four men accused of gang-raping a woman has begun in a remote Pakistani village after a tribal council ordered it to punish her family.\u003cbr/\u003eTen other men also went on trial in the same court in the central town of Dera Ghazi Khan for allegedly ordering the rape.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 14 all pleaded not guilty. The four accused of rape face death by hanging. The others face jail terms.\u003cbr/\u003eThe June 22 gang-rape stunned the country, highlighting the low status of women in remote rural areas, where tribal councils often resolve disputes following ancient codes of honour and revenge.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman was raped repeatedly at the orders of the tribal council in the village of Meerwala to punish her brother, who was seen walking unchaperoned with a girl belonging to a richer tribe.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan's military ruler, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, gave the woman's family a check worth dlrs 8,000 as compensation and said a new school would be built in her name.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial also began amid a new national outrage after eight girls in another central Pakistan village were offered in marriage earlier this week to older men to settle a blood debt between two families.
