Wide shot of Houses of Parliament from across River Thames\u003cbr/\u003eThe leaders of Britain's three main political parties intensified their relentless campaign drive on Monday, three days before the nation goes to the polls in what's set to be the tightest election race for decades. \u003cbr/\u003eThe election pitches Labour prime minister Gordon Brown against Conservative opposition leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg. \u003cbr/\u003eAt stake are the keys to 10 Downing St - and ownership of what may be something of a poisoned chalice. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause whichever party heads the next government, it's certain to impose deep budget cuts, and reap a whirlwind of unpopularity.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has been a bruising campaign for Gordon Brown, who's been prime minister since Tony Blair stepped down in 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eWidely praised for his international leadership when the financial crisis struck, and famed for his mastery of detail, Brown has nonetheless struggled on the campaign trail.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's suffered from a lack of charisma, a certain degree of bad luck, and one disastrous gaffe - when he was overheard insulting a Labour voter, seconds after being filmed chatting happily to her.\u003cbr/\u003eNot even his wife, PR specialist Sarah Brown, was able to rescue him that one. \u003cbr/\u003eBut former Labour leader Lord Kinnock, who lost the 1992 election to Margaret Thatcher, says people shouldn't vote on the basis of charisma.\u003cbr/\u003eHe comments: \"If it's entertainment you want, if it's apparent charisma you want, go to the cinema. If it's utterly dependable, totally dedicated, highly intelligent leadership for the country you want - for your future and your children's future - go to Gordon Brown.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBrown's main challenger, David Cameron, is seeking to restore the Conservatives to government after 13 years in opposition.\u003cbr/\u003eSmooth and articulate, and with a casual manner \"Call me Dave\" approach that belies his privileged background, Cameron has steered the party away from the right towards the centre ground - aided by his equally telegenic wife Samantha. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former Eton scholar was talent-spotted by one of Thatcher's former treasury chiefs, Lord Lamont, in 1992:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think he's highly intelligent, cool under pressure and pretty tough,\" Lamont recalled. \u003cbr/\u003e\"He comes from a so-called posh background, but actually I think he's a thoroughly typical person of his generation in his tastes, and his liking for life and enjoyment of life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor decades British elections have been a two-horse race between Labour and the Conservatives, with the centre-left Liberal Democrats lagging a distant third. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this campaign has seen the emergence of the Liberal Democrats as a serious threat to both of the bigger parties, with the prospect of its leader Nick Clegg becoming king-maker in the event of a hung parliament. \u003cbr/\u003eBlessed with the fresh-faced youthful looks of a TV game show host, Clegg won plaudits for his performance in the televised election debates between the three prime ministerial contenders in April. \u003cbr/\u003eClegg's pledge to clean up politics in the wake of the parliamentary expenses scandal has struck a chord with many undecided voters.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What he has managed to do is to come across as someone who is absolutely genuine and sincere, as he is, and as someone who really is an outsider,\" comments Chris Huhne, who would likely become Home Secretary (interior minister) if the Lib Dems were to win the election.\u003cbr/\u003ePollsters say Clegg's ratings have waned somewhat since the first election debate on April 15.\u003cbr/\u003eNonetheless he's still scoring well, and his unexpected success has worried the Conservatives, according to Andrew Hawkins of the Comres polling agency:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Nick
