country of Senegal say the coastline there is disappearing at an average rate of between one and two metres a year.\u003cbr/\u003eSea-level rise is one of the key topics on the programme for the scientific congress this week, and its destructive effects can be seen at several points along the Senegalese coast.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Senegalese government is building sea-walls in areas along the coast it believes are most vulnerable, to the advancing sea. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the coastal village of Popenguine, 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the capital Dakar, houses along this stretch of beach have been abandoned and left to the waters.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal fisherman, Ibrahima Ndione, 41, said he used to play football here when the shoreline had a wide sandy beach.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now the sea reaches right up to a row of houses, destroyed over time by the waves.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Isabel Niang, of Dakar's Anta Diop University, is an expert on coastal erosion and says climate change is to blame for the devastating erosion in some of Senegal's coastal villages.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says coastlines in the country's most vulnerable areas are disappearing fast.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the village of Mbao, in the Dakar suburbs, the Senegalese government has built a wall to protect villagers from the sea water.\u003cbr/\u003eAssane Gningue, a retired civil servant, said the village used to be one kilometre (0.6 miles) from the sea shore.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Now the sea has taken everything,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eAly Haidar, chairman of Oceanium Dakar, a local non-government organisation that deals with environment protection, says he sees no long-term solution to the problem, other than a global response to climate change and its on global warming at a Copenhagen conference this week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three-day conference aims to update the science on climate change since the last United Nations report two years ago.
