Sequence of people looking at works of art hanging on walls\u003cbr/\u003eCollectors around the world are paying more and more attention to Chinese art as China bursts onto the world scene as a political and economic power.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heart of China's contemporary art scene lies in an eastern Beijing suburb. \u003cbr/\u003eHere, inside the once secret compound of a military equipment factory, is the city's most happening art district, known as Dashanzi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe district has just celebrated the 'Third Annual Dashanzi Art Festival' (Apr 29, 2006 To May 21, 2006)  the largest of its kind in China.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there are fears developers could put an end to this booming area. \u003cbr/\u003eLike much else in the rapidly changing cities of China, Dashanzi, Beijing's art district, lives a precarious existence, threatened by the development that has taken much of urban China by storm. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this atmosphere of change, destruction and rebirth is also helping to fuel the creativity of the Chinese art scene.\u003cbr/\u003eRecently the 2006 Dashanzi International Arts Festival was held in Beijing. Dozens of installations, performances, and visual art displays finally closed at the end of the nearly month long event. \u003cbr/\u003eThe largest and most influential festival of its kind in China, Dashanzi attracted art buffs from around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eDashanzi burst onto the Beijing scene three years ago, when artists began moving into this East German-designed factory compound, which had been built in the 1950s to make military components. \u003cbr/\u003eNow home to a unique post-Communist cultural experiment, the district is a blend of Bauhaus-era architecture, Maoist propaganda slogans, and the cutting edge of Chinese art. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the festival was bigger and more international than ever, with work by nearly 1,000 artists from more than a dozen countries. \u003cbr/\u003eBut few people thought the festival would last this long. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Beijing's pre-Olympics real estate frenzy, the government chose Dashanzi for a massive new development. \u003cbr/\u003eWith demolition set for December 31, 2005, developers planned to turn the art district into a high-tech Silicon Valley. \u003cbr/\u003eArtists, critics, and gallery owners spent months in uncertainty, waiting for the bulldozers to arrive.\u003cbr/\u003eArt Critic Zhang Zhaohui has been involved in the Dashanzi scene since the conception of its first galleries, in 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eDestruction and redevelopment across the city are rapidly reshaping Beijing, pushing many long time residents to the margins. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is no surprise then that \"demolition\" was the dominant theme at this year's festival.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response to the plans to demolish Dashanzi, the local and international art community organised a campaign to save it. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, they convinced the Beijing government, and Dashanzi management, the state-run Seven Star Group, to rethink their plans.\u003cbr/\u003eDashanzi's buildings are safe for now, at least until after the 2008 Olympics.\u003cbr/\u003eEntrepreneur and art fan Charlie Kan says there is an atmosphere of uncertainty hanging over the district.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith interest in the space on the rise, new bars and galleries are popping up everyday. \u003cbr/\u003eYet some artists, like Qing Qing, who moved in when there were only a handful of galleries in the district, think Dashanzi is becoming too commercial. \u003cbr/\u003eA dozen new galleries and a handful of new bars have opened in the district just this year, bringing around 200,000 visitors to the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough some, like Qing Qing, are weary of the rapid growth of the district, no one can deny that Dashanzi is exposing a new generation of Chinese to modern
