Wide of kids playing under light\u003cbr/\u003eTribes people in Hsinchu, Taiwan are coming to terms with modern technology. \u003cbr/\u003eThe villages of the Atayal - a remote tribe indigenous to Smangus in the north west of the country, have been fitted with an advanced lighting system. \u003cbr/\u003eNow they have electric lighting using energy saving bulbs in their homes and schools.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for older generations the lighting revolution is a challenge to ancient tribal rituals and traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe  Atayal  tribes people make their home 1995 metres (6545.196 ft ) in the midst of Snow Mountain in the Hsinchu County of Taiwan. \u003cbr/\u003eRoad access to the village starts at a lofty 1590 metres (5216.472 ft). \u003cbr/\u003eThere are 154 members of the Atayal tribe making up 28 households. \u003cbr/\u003eTwenty years ago it was common for the Atayal to carry a flaming torch ignited by a burning piece of red pine bark to walk through the forest when they had to visit friends at night. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to local Atayal Yuraw Icyang, Taiwan red pine is found mainly in areas above an elevation of 1000 metres (3280.8 ft). \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he was taught by his ancestors to conserve the wood by cutting only one-third of the bark from the bottom of tree so that the bark being cut off can be re-grown in 5 years.\u003cbr/\u003eElectricity is no stranger to the tribes people - they've had a rudimentary system since 1979. But now Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute has replaced the traditional incandescent lamps with a new energy saving system.\u003cbr/\u003eAged 70, tribe leader Icyh Sulung recalls good memories of star watching when there were no electric lights at all in the village. \"I like the flame made by burning the red pine bark and it doesn't cost any money. But we have to pay for our electricity for the lighting system. adopting advanced technology.\u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute, which is responsible for the project, has carried out different kinds of test for light bulbs or lamps to ensure their durability under the special climate in the Snow Mountain.\u003cbr/\u003eLee Li-Ling, who's in charge of the project, says the institute is trying to bring the comforts of electricity to the tribes people without harming their traditions.  \"Regarding the application of the technology, we have designed it to control the intensity of the light and the length of time it is switched
