With the launch of websites like MP3.com, artists now have a new way to reach their audience --- through the internet. MP3.com is a website which offers visitors the opportunity to download artists' music free of charge via mp3 files. The files are usually a song track which can be downloaded onto a personal computer and recorded to a cd. Artists agree to provide free songs to the site in exchange for the contract-free exposure and wide distribution. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first major artist to jump ship from traditional music studios was ALANIS MORISETTE. Together with TORI AMOS, she launched their 26 city tour and its co-sponsor was none other than MP3.com. As recent as September of this year, the company struck another deal with R\u0026amp;B group TLC to distribute their new song track entitled \\\"I Need That\\\". Each time a fan downloads the song from the website, MP3.com donates ten cents to a charity of the artist's choice. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to RON RICHARDSON, Media Venture Managing Editor of Spin Magazine, record companies remain wary of mp3 files saying the new format is not supported by the recording industry because of piracy issues around it. According to Richardson, fans who download mp3 files from the website can then resend the file to \\\"...eight hundred of their closest friends\\\". He also says that record companies feel they are protecting their artists' rights to their music by controlling the distribution of their music. When asked about Morissette's involvement in mp3.com Richardson said the deal, \\\"...brings her a lot of press..and gives her a chance for a very high profile tour\\\" in being associated with mp3.com. \u003cbr/\u003eWhether or not Alanis' move to have her tour sponsored by MP3.com was a publicity stunt or not, the industry may see some ohter big artists jump onto the internet bandwagon.
