As an adolescent he was  attracted to men.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because homosexuality is a taboo in Chinese society, he put all his energy into his  art.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile teaching modern dance in Europe and back in China he decided to become a  woman.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was supported in his decision by his friends and family.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since I knew her, I have always been treating her like a girl, despite she did not have  taken the operation yet. Although other countries did  give me certain influence, it's untrue to say America or Europe change me completely,  no it's not right. I personally had\u003cbr/\u003ethe need to do what I did.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Jin Xing, Transexual dancer-choreographer\u003cbr/\u003eEven Chinese government, and officials from the Ministry of Culture have displayed  unprecedented tolerance.\u003cbr/\u003eJin Xing admits her position as well as social background helped ease the situation.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese hospitals turned down more than 30, 000 requests for sex-change operations  in the last six years and Chinese homosexuals are still persecuted.\u003cbr/\u003eLast weekend, Jin Xing had her first female performance in Beijing, entitled \"Born  Again\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"When we felt the need to really do the change, she did it with courage, and in  disregard of the prejudice she could face in our society.
