Various of female soldiers with Kalashnikovs\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eSudan's is anxiously awaiting the outcome of its first national elections for ten years.\u003cbr/\u003ePolling came to an end on Sunday after 12 days of voting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ballots are still being counted and early results are expected from Wednesday (March 20). \u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign issues reflected the massive problems of a country torn by war and economic problems, with politicians luring wary voters with food and other incentives.\u003cbr/\u003eLife is hard for most people in Sudan. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the 40 years of its independence, the country has seen hunger, epidemics, and war. \u003cbr/\u003eThese refugees have come to the El Salaam refugee camp to escape the civil war that's been raging in Southern Sudan for 13 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands have died and the fighting has devastated the economy.  \u003cbr/\u003eSudanese government officials hope the first national elections in ten years will provide more stability. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the El Salaam camp, few believe the promises made by campaigning politicians.\u003cbr/\u003eSunday was the last chance for the 10 million registered voters to go to the polls. \u003cbr/\u003eDue to widespread illiteracy, election organizers were forced to use pictorial symbols on the ballots to represent the 41 different candidates. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd due to long distances and poor communications, the results will not be known until Wednesday at the earliest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government expects the vote to confirm the country's military leader Lieutenant General Omar el-Bashir as president. He took power in a 1989 coup. \u003cbr/\u003eThe election comes at a time of increasing isolation for Sudan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States considers the country a terrorist-sponsoring state.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this year Washington  pulled out its diplomatic staff, claiming they were in danger from Islamic radicals supported by the Sudanese government. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd Sudan's neighbours accuse it of stirring up Islamic rebellions. \u003cbr/\u003eSudanese politicians dismiss the claims as ridiculous. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Oh yes, we have been inviting the whole world to come over here and see if there's any terrorist groups... I mean, when I read those coups, about coups, especially in the American Congress, I just laugh. It will make you a laughing stock I told them - come to the Sudan and just mention a place, I will drive you immediately into that place and we will see if there's a police station even, let alone camps with foreigners and all that... I mean! And journalists are welcome to come to this country to see if people are terrorists.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Hassan Turabi, Islamic Cleric\u003cbr/\u003eBut nobody can ignore the fact that the situation in the country is far from normal.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a camp outside Khartoum, these women are being trained as part of the so-called Popular Defence Force. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are being prepared to fight against their fellow countrymen  -  and countrywomen -- in the southern part of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eWhoever wins the elections will have to tackle the problems posed by the
