Bush.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he would offer further help to the government-in-exile of President Burhanuddin Rabbani. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Russians already have been helping the Afghan opposition, which controls about five percent of the territory of Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbani leads the very forces that battled Soviet forces and finally defeated them. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Russia sees the Afghan opposition as the best bet to defeat the Taliban and prevent the spread of Islamic fundamentalism into Central Asia.\u003cbr/\u003ePutin also said Russia was ready to open its airspace for humanitarian aid in case of an attack on Afghanistan and said Central Asian countries may open their airfields to the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Russian leader said Russia would actively
