Wide of Alcantara turning off the lights\u003cbr/\u003eA 65-year-old grandmother in the Philippines is leading a coalition of environmental groups and individuals to counter pollution, following the diagnosis of her first grandson with asthma caused by poor air quality.\u003cbr/\u003eOdette Alcantara, fondly called \"Lola O\" (Mother O) by her peers, is the founder of the Mother Earth Network, a group that brings environmental workers together.\u003cbr/\u003eAlcantara's crusade is born of a personal experience.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When my first grandson was having asthma attacks and I learned from Doctor Flavier, Juan Flavier (former government health secretary), that it's air pollution that causes asthma attacks and other pulmonary-related diseases,\" Alcantara told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was my love for my grandson that drove me to protect him from air pollution.\" she added.\u003cbr/\u003eAlcantara's main point of contention is the build up of rubbish in the environment.\u003cbr/\u003ePhilippine government figures put the garbage produced by Manila's 10 (m) million residents at six-thousand tonnes a day, with the majority of waste going directly to landfills in towns outside the city.\u003cbr/\u003eAlcantara believes the amount going to landfill can be reduced to 20 percent, or even to nothing, if the government implements a specifically crafted law.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposed law mandates that each village should have a facility for composting and the collection of \"wet\" waste and that each household should be required to segregate their garbage.\u003cbr/\u003eStudies have shown that 50 to 60 percent of household wastes can be composted and a further 30 percent can be recycled or re-used straight away.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reusable items are things that shops can actually collect and sell for money like bottles, paper and cans.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Management simply means having a place for everything and making sure that everything is in its place,\" explained Alcantara as she showed the process she implements in her own house.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explained the way that rubbish can theoretically be a thing of the past.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you don't mix the two general types, biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable, you'll have no garbage.
