crackdown has broken his silence in a posthumous memoir that gives a rare insight to the inner workings of the Communist Party during a critical time.\u003cbr/\u003eIt took hours of secret recordings and years of clandestine planning to get the material smuggled out and translated.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in a conclusion extraordinary for someone who devoted his career to the party, Zhao Ziyang also urges China to become a parliamentary democracy in order to truly modernise.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 306-page \"Prisoner of the State: The Secret Journal of Premier Zhao Ziyang\" was crafted over four years from tapes recorded in secret by Zhao, who lived under tightly monitored house arrest for 15 years before dying in 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eIt chronicles the events that led up to the 1989 protests and details how party leaders grappled with the situation. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also describes for the first time the loneliness the snowy-haired, bespectacled Zhao, felt while in exile. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the book covers the same ground others before have explored, the first-person account and intimate details of political bickering and machinations are new.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile it may raise eyebrows among the Communist Party leadership, it is unlikely to cause real waves among the top cadres. \u003cbr/\u003eThe leaders who took over after Zhao's ouster have marginalised his liberal wing of the party. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir official verdict, that the crushing of the Tiananmen protests paved the way for China's economic success, is generally accepted among the political and business elite.\u003cbr/\u003eA protege of the then-supreme leader Deng Xiaoping, Zhao helped launch China's economic boom in the 1980s through bold reform that brought new prosperity to an economy stagnated by the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because he clashed with other party factions over the Tiananmen protests, centered around calls for more political freedom and an end to corruption, and was sympathetic to the demonstrators, he was accused of \"splitting the party\" and purged on June 24, 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eZhao was last seen in public on May 19, 1989, the day before martial law was declared in Beijing, when he made a tearful visit to Tiananmen Square to talk to student hunger strikers. \u003cbr/\u003eHe famously apologised to them, saying \"I have come too late.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTwo weeks later, on June 3-4, the military crushed the dissent, killing hundreds and possibly thousands of people.\u003cbr/\u003eBao Pu, one of the book's editors said in an interview with AP Television that the memoir was \"absolutely invaluable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the memoir would restore some of the history that has been intentionally erased or distorted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 42 year-old editor, whose father, Bao Tong, was Zhao's top aide, recalled that he was shocked and impressed by the voice of Zhao telling about what he felt on the night of June 3rd as a first-person account. \u003cbr/\u003eBao said Zhao himself did not leave any instructions on how these recordings should be used. \u003cbr/\u003eBut said there was no doubt that Zhao wanted his version of the story to survive. \u003cbr/\u003eHe believed that the book would catch the attention of the Chinese authority and hoped the leaders can reverse the verdict of the Tiananmen pro-democracy movement.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter Zhao's death, all the materials were gathered to be transcribed in one place in a complex, clandestine effort, according to one of the editors of the book.\u003cbr/\u003eThe whole process took two years and another two were needed to translate Zhao's words and bring the book to fruition.\u003cbr/\u003eA Chinese version will be published later this
