technology and art. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Shanghai eARTS festival is underway in the city and it aims to bring digital art out of the museums and into public spaces.\u003cbr/\u003eLess than two decades ago, this area was swamp and farm land. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Zhangjiabang River banks where Shanghai built up a Science and Technology Museum has been transformed beyond recognition but now the second eARTS festival is giving it a new face.\u003cbr/\u003eHere Shanghai residents get to see the latest iPhones being used as more than a communications gadget.\u003cbr/\u003eJapanese artist Masayuki Akamatsu, a leader in the world's digital arts world, orchestrates his \"Snowflakes\" performance, which uses iPhones as instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eUsing GPS (global positioning system) and wireless network technology each iPhone flashes images and audio and together creates the effect.\u003cbr/\u003eThe performance is fitting in a country where many people have embraced the mobile phone.\u003cbr/\u003ePhilip Dodd is a consultant for the Shanghai eARTS festival and former Director of London's Institute of Contemporary Arts. \u003cbr/\u003eHe believes that China is going to lead the digital culture in the 21st century, saying that there are already 500 million mobile (cell) phones in China.\u003cbr/\u003eShanghai eARTS is also showcasing other unusual works which combine the disciplines of technology and art.  \u003cbr/\u003eLaetitia Sonami's \"Lady's Glove\" is a multimedia work in which the artist controls real time video and audio clips on stage.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal artist, Wang Changcun's inventive approach involves using computer algorithms to compose music for the piano.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang Peili is one of the curators for the river event called \"Streaming Objects\". \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that only an outdoor setting would work for the audience to fully appreciate the artworks.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to installation projects and performances, the eARTS festival also has some workshops for young artists to come and learn new methods.\u003cbr/\u003eZhou Yingzi is the General Manager of Shanghai eARTS and the Deputy Supervisor of the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation's Project Development Department.\u003cbr/\u003eZhou says the festival helps to create a new face for the Shanghai cultural scene and brings more individualism to the city. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that rather than things being 'made in China' he wants things to be 'created in China'. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eARTS festival isn't just a venue for the world's renowned artists, but one also where young Chinese can show off their talents.\u003cbr/\u003eAaajiao is a 24-year-old computer science graduate from Wuhan University who has been creating digital art for two years.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the help of architects Aaajiao built a large box and inside created a massive interactive Google Earth page on the floor. \u003cbr/\u003eThe infrared machine above detects movement and changes the screens accordingly.\u003cbr/\u003eAaajiao says some people think scientific development is too fast, while others think it's not enough. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the goal of his piece is to get people to consider how we use technology and how it changes our lives.\u003cbr/\u003eArtist Maurice Benayoun from France believes that unlike in the west, people in China are much more open about technology.\u003cbr/\u003eBenayoun uses his installation \"NeORIZON\" to create a city with the 'worm codes' of people.\u003cbr/\u003e'Worm codes' convert people into signs to make them definitely recognisable.\u003cbr/\u003eThe red button on the side of the machine creates a picture of the person looking into the box.\u003cbr/\u003eA 2-D code is given as a receipt and the codes build up on a large screen to create buildings in the city - a digital city of Shanghai residents.\u003cbr/\u003eThe eArts festival's outdoor installations and performances will run until
