The house had been derelict, never open to the public. Since the late 1990s we have raised about 3.1 million (GB) pounds to make this house and history come to life. Secretary Jack Straw and US ambassador Robert Tuttle. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking on the 300th birthday of the US founding father, the two men paid tribute to Franklin as a true Anglo-American.\u003cbr/\u003eFranklin lodged in the four-storey brick building in Craven Street just off Trafalgar Square between 1757 and 1775, acting as a diplomat on behalf of American colonists. \u003cbr/\u003eThe house - which curators call the \"first de facto US Embassy\" - was the site of many of Franklin's scientific experiments including the invention of bifocal glasses and the creation of an ethereal-sounding musical instrument, the glass armonica.\u003cbr/\u003eNow visitors can tour the parlour and other living rooms, and explore Franklin's discoveries for themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eThe building, formerly owned by the British government, was handed over to Franklin heritage campaigners by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has
