Various of dry Sudae reservoir\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea increased its production of staple foods for the second year in a row, thanks in part to better use of fertilisers and plastic sheeting to protect crops, but its citizens are still suffering from a serious lack of key proteins and fats in their diets, according to a UN report.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the 10 percent improvement over last year, North Korea will need to import 507-thousand metric tonnes of cereals to meet its basic food needs in 2013, Marcus Prior, World Food Programme's Asia spokesman, said, while explaining the report.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The good news is that the overall cereal production of staple foods in the country is up 10 percent. However what is of concern to the World Food Programme is that the soybean production is down by 30 percent which underlines our concerns for the good nutrition of young children,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report came after a UN team visited all nine agricultural provinces of North Korea in September and October during the main cereal harvest.\u003cbr/\u003eIn its eagerly anticipated report, the UN said it was concerned because of the chronic lack of proteins, oils, fats, vitamins and micro-nutrients in the typical North Korean diet remains a problem.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So a 30 percent reduction is really quite significant and underlines why our own programme of supplying specialised nutritious foods which contain these micro-nutrients and other important ingredients is so important for that section of the North Korean society,\" Prior said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile levels of acute malnutrition have declined, about 2.8 (m) million people in five provinces of the northeast, children, the elderly and pregnant and lactating women, remain vulnerable and need fortified biscuits and other highly nutritious food, the report said in urging international aid be targeted to these groups.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is still some way to go. noted that a national nutritional survey is expected at the end of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN report proposed ways to improve the North Korea diet, saying farmers there need to produce more protein-rich foods like fish and soybeans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report said overall production for the 2012-2013 early harvest was expected to be 5.8 (m) million metric tons. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has set a cereal import target of 300-thousand metric tonnes. \u003cbr/\u003eGiven the UN estimate that 507-thousand metric tonnes of imported cereals are needed, the deficit is expected to be 207-thousand metric tonnes, the lowest in many years, the statement said.\u003cbr/\u003eWith little arable land, harsh weather and chronic shortages of fuel and equipment, North Korea has struggled for decades to feed its 24 (m) million people. \u003cbr/\u003eIts new leader, Kim Jong Un, has made improving the economy a priority and has pledged to improve North Koreans' standards of living.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report was the first since he assumed power following the December death of his father, Kim Jong Il, and it appeared aimed at encouraging the fledgling changes in farming
