Close up camels chewing grass\u003cbr/\u003eThailand is set to launch its newest tourist attraction; herds of camels. \u003cbr/\u003eThe order book at the country's only camel farm is starting to fill up; the fruit of a seven year project.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sight of these so-called \"ships of the desert\" careening through the lush jungles of Thailand is enough to make anyone look twice. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd that's precisely the reaction the government's Livestock Research Centre in Lop Buri, 115 km (71 miles) north of Bangkok, has been banking on. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen they began their breeding programme in 1995 they hoped that \"wow\" factor would bring tourist bosses flocking to their door, eager to snap up the strange beasts for their resorts and attractions. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's been slow going, but now they think they've turned the corner; eight camels have been ordered for next January (2003), including two for a zoo in neighbouring Laos. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a lucrative business. The cost per animal is around 650 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eElephant rides have long been a part of the tourist itinerary in Thailand; now it looks like an alternative will attract even more tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's daily training at the research centre, coaxing the camels into lying down so it's easier for paying passengers to climb aboard. \u003cbr/\u003eCamels are not native to South-East Asia and they've had a hard time adjusting to the humid Thai climate. \u003cbr/\u003eTwenty five were brought over from their arid home in the Australian desert at the start of the programme. Four soon died from lung infections. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, though, the herd's tripled in number to 80. \u003cbr/\u003eStaff believe camels can now breed and survive in South east Asia with little trouble. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're also great at eating almost anything; far easier to deal with than cows or buffalos, according to the staff.\u003cbr/\u003eLonger term the goal extends beyond just tourism. \u003cbr/\u003eCamels produce a rich and nutritious milk that compares favourably to that produced by cows. They also produce high quality meat. The Centre hopes their potential as economic animals will be recognised by Thai farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eWith concern that recent travel warnings from Western governments will lead to a fall in visitor
