WS audience\u003cbr/\u003eThe 33rd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards were presented Thursday night at the Sheraton Hotel in New York. This year's inductees were Barry Manilow, Sting, Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Randy Newman and Michael Jackson.  \u003cbr/\u003eGarth Brooks received the Hitmaker award, while Stevie Wonder, already a Hall member, received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother previous inductee, Carole King, was honored with the Johnny Mercer Award. \u003cbr/\u003eNewman's induction comes three months after he won his first Oscar - following fifteen unsuccessful nominations for best song.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has also written songs and scores include 'Toy Story' and 'The Natural'. \u003cbr/\u003eThe husband-and-wife team of Ashford and Simpson have had a few hits of their own but are better known as songwriters for Motown. Among their hits are 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' 'You're All I Need To Get By' and 'Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand.' \u003cbr/\u003eManilow was honored for co-writing such hits as 'Could It Be Magic', 'Even Now' and 'Copacabana (At the Copa)'. \u003cbr/\u003eMichael Jackson did not attend the event, but two of his close friends, Liza Minnelli and husband David Gest, were there to accept his award. They thanked The Gloved One for introducing them to each other.\u003cbr/\u003eJackson has already been inducted twice into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame - as a solo artist and as a member of the Jackson Five.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough he has written a few songs for other artists, such as Diana Ross' 'Muscles', most of the hits he's penned have been for himself. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong those who performed at the ceremony to honour the inductees were Trisha Yearwood, who sang Manilow's 'Could It Be Magic'; Brian McKnight, who sang some Sting songs - and Rufus Wainwright, who performed Carole
