Various of Filettino\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Italians battle their economic crisis the small Italian town of Filettino is continuing to battle for independence.\u003cbr/\u003eA law passed under former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi forced all towns with less than 1,000 residents to merge with other neighbouring ones so Filettino now wants to declare itself an independent principality.\u003cbr/\u003eA tiny hill town south of Rome is fighting for independence so that it doesn't disappear from the Italian political map. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce a popular ski resort, Filettino is now taking measures to proclaim itself a principality.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe town is one of the 1,963 municipalities in Italy with less that a thousand residents forced to merge with larger neighbouring towns after an austerity law passed under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe town currently has 554 residents.\u003cbr/\u003eMayor Luca Sellari says that the idea to break away from the Italian state has its origins even before the austerity law was passed last September. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For over a year we had been thinking about creating an authority or something that could develop this amazing area. And, moreover, develop the natural resources that are not developed or exploited today. From that, even before my candidacy as mayor, with a group of friends we thought about developing a project based on this principle,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eFilettino sits on one of Europe's largest groundwater basins and provides a much of Rome and 50 other towns with drinking water.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because drinking water is managed by the Italian state, Filettino's treasury sees no share in the profits deriving from it. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile Filettino's aspirations to become a monarchy might seem pure provocation, Luca Sellari has taken his project some steps further.\u003cbr/\u003eThe high-flying mayor has formed a constituent assembly that has recently approved a constitution and elected Carlo Taormina, Silvio Berlusconi's former lawyer, as the head of the principality. \u003cbr/\u003eFilettino's inhabitants will vote on the constitution in a referendum before the end of the year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe self-proclaimed principality already has a coat of arms, as well as a currency and a strategy to confront the economic crisis flagellating the Italian state. \u003cbr/\u003e\"With all that is going on at the moment, it seems pretty clear that the Euro is short-lived.
